Double award win for Journalism students at national broadcast awards

Journalism students picked up two awards at a prestigious national awards for their work to make it three consecutive years of multiple wins for the University of Salford.

Salford scooped up Best Podcast and Best Radio Feature at the 2025 Broadcast Journalism Training Council Awards in London last week.

Winning in two out of three shortlisted categories at the awards, the double win follows a trio of wins in both 2024 and 2023, on top of another double win in 2021.

The Best Podcast win marks the third consecutive year that Salford students have taken home the prize with Journalism lecturer Caroline Cheetham, who teaches the University’s acclaimed Podcasting module, in attendance for the awards to support the students.

Six BA Journalism students were involved in the Best Podcast win for their podcast, The Melting Pod. Billy Gough, Tom Turner, Lily Holt and Whitehead, who were in attendance, alongside hosts Georgia Spratt and Gabe Soundara.

Tom wrote on social media: “So proud to have been part of the team to win Best Podcast at the BJTC Awards in London last night.

“Really grateful to have had such an amazing team behind every treatment. [They] made it a joy to work on.”

Billy added on social media: “Very proud to have won a BJTC Award for Best Podcast, recognising my contributions to The Melting Pod – officially the UK’s BEST student podcast!”

Best Radio Feature was picked up by freelance journalist and BA Journalism (Broadcast ) graduate Emma Beggan for her feature Ovaryacting. The feature explores the impact that health conditions such as endometriosis, adenomyosis and polycystic ovary syndrome have on women around the world.

Emma wrote on social media: “I am delighted (and still a bit shocked) to share that I won the Best Radio Feature category at the BJTC Awards for my final project at The University of Salford.

“Thank you so much to my lecturer Caroline Cheetham and to Salford for putting me forward – I’m really grateful for the support and recognition. It means a lot to have my work acknowledged.”

The University has now won the Best Radio Feature category in four out of the last five years and was also the runner up in the category in the same year it won in 2023.
