China-India relations to be one of the focuses of new Salford master’s programme
The University of Salford has launched a new master’s programme to deepen our students’ understanding of the world of international relations at a time when the rules of global diplomacy are being repeatedly rewritten.
Our MA/PgDip International Relations and Global Challenges programme is now open for September 2026 entry, complementing our existing suite of specialist courses across our postgraduate Politics directorate, including our MA/PgDip in Terrorism and Security and MA/PgDip Intelligence and Security Studies programmes.
The programme will be led by Dr Fuzuo Wu, a former research fellow at Yale University, The University of Oxford and Princeton University and the University of Salford’s expert on China-Indian relations. It will have a focus on the challenges posed by the two great powers, particularly in terms of how they are impacting neighbouring nations and communities within the Global South in addition to their growing influence on climate change and violent conflicts across the globe.
The course is designed for students keen to grasp an understanding of the state of modern day international relations but also how the field is constantly adapting to emerging international crises.
Dr Wu said: “International relations is experiencing a systematic power shift across the globe with major players like China and India increasingly rising and hugely influencing decision making around energy security, nuclear non-proliferation, climate change and the ongoing conflicts in Europe and in the Middle East.
“The programme will provide a focus on these huge nations who continue to reshape the international order whilst also exploring the ongoing challenges like nationalism versus globalisation that we are seeing across the world.
“Students will develop their knowledge of this fascinating field and see the real-life consequences of nations’ actions play out on the international stage on some of the biggest issues of our time.
“This course will provide our students with knowledge and skills from Salford’s leading experts on this field, providing them with the tools to build a career across politics, government, diplomacy and in the military.
Dr Richard Jones, Director of Journalism, Politics and Contemporary History at the University of Salford, said: “Our world is full of challenges old and new. This exciting new programme is aimed at helping this University, our students and graduates tackle those issues with innovative new solutions."
Teaching on the full-time programme will also be scheduled in the late afternoons and early evenings where possible to support those who are keen to study alongside their working week and our part-time distance learning option will also be available from January 2027.
