Birthday Honours celebrate Salford alumni achievements

The Queen’s Honours recognise the achievements and service of extraordinary people across the United Kingdom.

They are awarded twice a year – at new year and in summer to mark the Queen’s birthday. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic the Queen’s Birthday honours were slightly delayed this year, however they have now been announced.

A number of University of Salford alumni and others with a connection to the university received honours, including:

DBE – Elaine Inglesby-Burke, honorary graduate, for services to nursing

Elaine Inglesby-Burke received a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to nursing. She is the Chief Nurse at Salford Royal NHS. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of Salford and received an Honorary Doctorate in 2018.

DBE – Maureen Lipman, honorary graduate, for services to charity, entertainment and the arts

The actor, columnist and comedian Maureen Lipman received a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for services to charity, entertainment and the arts.

OBE – Christopher Hindley, alum, for services to young people

Christopher Hindley received an OBE for services to young people in North West England. He is Chief Executive at Youth Fed and member of the board of the Cheshire and Warrington Local Enterprise Partnership. He has a master’s degree in Intelligence from the University of Salford, 1997-2001. 

MBE – Matthew Turner, alum, for services to the financial sector and the community in Bradford

Matthew Turner received an MBE for services to the financial sector and community in Bradford during Covid-19. Matthew works for Santander as Operational Control Manager – he studied TV and Radio Production at the university from 1998-2001. 

MBE – Quaisra Shahraz, alum, for services to gender equality and cultural learning

Quaisra Shahraz received an MBE for services to gender equality and cultural learning. She is a critically acclaimed novelist and scriptwriter. She has a master’s degree in scriptwriting from the University of Salford.

MBE – Professor Simon Wright, chair and clinical lead for the MSc Dental Implantology at the University of Salford, for services to patient safety

Professor Simon Wright received an MBE for services to patient safety in dentistry. He has a personal chair at the University of Salford and is also Clinical and Module Lead for the MSc Dental Implantology at Salford. Professor Simon Wright is a leading dentist based in Manchester. He is a principal partner of Glencairn Dental group.

MBE – Professor Malcolm Garrett, for services to design

Professor Malcolm Garrett received an MBE for services to design. He is a graphic designer known for his album covers. He has worked for iconic 70s and 80s bands such as Buzzcocks, Duran Duran and Simple Minds. He led a workshop for University of Salford students in 2018.
