Multi-Factor Authentication

We’re not keen on hackers or other people using your details to access our systems. Digital IT have introduced Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) to your student account.

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) helps us do that. MFA provides additional security by requiring a second form of authentication when logging in to your Microsoft account (used for email, Teams, OneDrive and other Office365 tools) and the Student Portal (portal.salford.ac.uk).
  • Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) allows you to reset your password at any time. Forgot your password? You can complete your password reset yourself with a security check once you have MFA set up via passwordreset.microsoftonline.com.

It’s one extra step for logging in, but a much safer way to ensure that no one takes advantage of your account. The simple extra step is only required when you’re accessing your University account from a new device, a new web browser, a new location or you’ve not authenticated for 13 days.

Once you have MFA set up, you’ll be asked to confirm it’s you whenever you log in. You can choose to do this by doing one of the following:

  • Answer security questions you set up
  • Input a code sent to you via text message
  • Select ‘approve’ on the Microsoft Authenticator app push notification

If you require assistance with your Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) or with your Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) please self-help in the first instance with the user guides linked above. If you are still having trouble, you can then contact the Digital IT Service Desk on +44 (0)161 295 2444.
