Events are powerful platforms for inspiring sustainable behaviours, raising awareness, and driving positive environmental and social change.

Advocacy, Partners and Community

  • Integrate sustainability into event content: include a welcome slide highlighting current University and/or event sustainability
achievements and how attendees can contribute that day.
  • Get in touch with the Sustainability Team (sustainability@salford.ac.uk) for advice, support and you can even offer the Sustainability Team a slot/stall at key conferences or add content to any campus tours to promote our sustainability message.
  • In communications link to the University Sustainability Strategy; reference the University’s net‑zero carbon by 2038 ambition.
  • Collaborate across internal teams and local partners to share resources, co‑host events, and reduce impacts (e.g., shared structures, shuttle services).

Avoiding Greenwashing

Greenwashing happens when organisations overstate, exaggerate, or misrepresent the environmental benefits of an activity. To avoid it:

  • Be accurate – Only share claims you can back up with evidence.
  • Be specific – Avoid vague terms like “eco‑friendly” or “green.”
  • Be transparent – Say what you are doing and what you are not doing yet.
  • Use real data – Report measurable outcomes (e.g., % recycling, number of attendees using active travel).
  • Don’t claim perfection – Sustainable events are about continuous improvement, not flawless performance.
  • A truthful message builds trust, credibility and supports the University’s wider sustainability goals.
