Your Wellbeing and Counselling
University life can be exciting, but it can also bring challenges. Our Wellbeing Advisors are here to support you - whether you’re looking for general wellbeing tips or need help with something that’s causing you significant stress, distress, or concern.
We offer wellbeing support and counselling services, and you can also receive 24/7 support via the HealthHero phone line.
Wellbeing and counselling support
Your wellbeing
There might be times when you just need someone to talk to about a personal issue, especially if it’s something you don’t feel comfortable discussing with friends, family, or your tutor. No matter how big or small the issue feels, you're welcome to speak with a Wellbeing Advisor. They can help you talk things through, offer support, and, if needed, refer you to more specialised mental health services.
Wellbeing Advisors:
- Are skilled counsellors, social workers, psychologists and mental health nurses
- Work in a non-judgemental and supportive way
- Offer support in a highly confidential setting
- Help you explore the issues you’re facing, listen to your concerns, and work with you to find the best way forward
- Offer different support to counselling sessions – they don’t provide counselling or therapy sessions
- Have a good understanding of mental health but are not able to diagnose mental health conditions
- Offer phone triage and face-to-face sessions throughout the week, as well as follow-up sessions where appropriate
You can discuss personal issues regarding your mental health with Wellbeing Advisors. They will offer you a space to explore them, supporting you by looking at your options and help you to take any next steps.
Counselling
Sometimes it can be helpful to talk things through with someone outside of your usual support network. Counselling gives you the space to explore how you’re feeling in a safe, confidential, and non-judgemental setting. It can help you make sense of your situation, understand yourself better, and find ways to move forward.
We work with Vita Health Group, a trusted external provider of professional counselling. Vita Health is an award-winning organisation with extensive experience in supporting mental health and wellbeing. Their qualified team offers counselling to help with a wide range of personal challenges, using a variety of methods including face-to-face, telephone, and online sessions.
If you’re interested in accessing counselling, the first step is to complete our online self-referral form. A member of the Wellbeing Team will then get in touch with you to discuss your needs and, if appropriate, refer you to Vita Health for counselling.
Counselling with Vita Health:
- Offers a confidential space to talk through personal issues
- Is provided by qualified and experienced professionals
- Follows ethical guidance set by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
- Is available through a range of formats, including online, phone, or face-to-face sessions
Please note that counselling is a limited resource and it's important to attend your appointments once agreed. If you're unable to attend, just let us know as soon as possible so we can offer the space to another student.
