We’re delighted to announce that the University of Salford Conferencing Team with support from the Environmental Sustainability Team has achieved the Platinum ECOsmart award recognising our ongoing commitment to sustainability across our conference venues on campus.

ECOsmart is a certification awarded by Greengage to venues that demonstrate strong environmental practices. The assessment covers a wide range of building operations, including waste and recycling, energy and water usage, and sustainable building infrastructure.

The University was particularly applauded for:

  • Excellent access to recycling facilities
  • The use of solar panels as a renewable energy source
  • Rainwater harvesting for toilet facilities
  • The incorporation of green walls across campus

The work of Eat and Drink at Salford was also celebrated, with special recognition given to the Sustainable Salford buffet. This initiative uses locally sourced produce, surplus food and ingredients that might otherwise go to waste - helping to reduce food waste while supporting local suppliers.

Greengage also highlighted the University’s progress in addressing single-use plastics. While work continues to further reduce single-use plastics across campus, we’ve already made strong strides. Notably, our Conferencing Team no longer offers freebies, stationery or handouts, significantly reducing unnecessary waste.

The team has also recently signed the Net Zero Carbon Events Pledge - part of a broader effort to accelerate the transition towards global net zero emissions and to help deliver the goals of the Paris Agreement.
