Student Shortlisted for Fashion Illustration Award

Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

A student at the University of Salford has been shortlisted for Graduate Fashion Week's ‘Fashion Illustration Award’.

Tia Brown, who studied a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design, placed among the top ten fashion illustrators in the UK for the competition.

She said: “I was very excited to find out I had been selected as part of the top ten fashion illustrators in the UK. I have always been very proud of my illustrations, and it felt great to receive the recognition from an industry panel.”

For the competition, Tia submitted an illustration from a collection she did in her final year at Salford.

She said: “The illustration was from my children’s wear collection named ‘Untethered’. It was a drawing created digitally on my iPad. From this I was invited to go to London to do a short presentation about my award to an industry panel.”

She added: “My collection was centred around childlike creativity, so I was able to have a lot of fun in the illustrations throughout the project. I went back to everything I used to create from my childhood, such as painting, collages, and doodling.

“I combined all these techniques to create fun textile pieces and refined all this into a digital drawing. The drawing aimed to communicate this untethered attitude we have in childhood and the designs aimed to reflect this creative playfulness.”

Tia Graduated this summer from Salford and says that her course opened many opportunities for her.

“Salford has helped me by opening a lot of opportunities such as competitions for me to enter. I have been on so many amazing trips such as New York and Milan and taken part in incredible events set up by the university. This has really inspired me to continue the course and gave me incredible experience working in industry environments.”

While we are sad to see Tia go, like many of our graduates, she is moving on to bigger and brighter things.

“I am happy to say I recently won other competitions alongside this one. I am working on a new collection named Wooden Dummy. I am constructing two new looks to be sent to San Francisco for an incredible runway show with the Arts of Fashion event.

“I am also looking to start an internship set up with ‘UKFT MADE IT’, meaning I will hopefully soon be moving to London to work within industry over the summer.”
