With four Salford students shortlisted it was Charlie Catlow who came out on top with a special mention for Jaymi Lyon. Charlie has now won £1,000 in prize money and the possibility of an internship at one of Pentlands portfolio of fashion brands which includes the likes of Lacoste, Ted Baker and Speedo.

Students were provided with the brief ‘The image of an icon’ and asked to design one item of casual apparel, footwear, or accessory, that Winston Churchill would be proud to wear in 2022 with strictly no formalwear or tailoring.

Charlie was not only interviewed by industry experts, but he was also interviewed by Churchill's family, and upon winning he said:

“The Pentland Churchill competition allowed me to delve into the subtleties of Churchill's life whilst balancing it with the identity of the Pentland brand. It was a very fun project that celebrated the joy of painting, yet it also focused on the Pentland consumers' needs and therefore mirrored what an industry brief would look like. I'm grateful for winning and having the opportunity to express my creativity.”

Katie Greenyer, Creative Talent & Networks Director at Pentland Brands Limited, said: “The standard from Salford was incredible! Four Salford student submissions made it through to the final interview stage with some truly astounding and unique creative projects.

“We were overwhelmed by their research into Pentland Brands & Churchill and how they creatively juxtaposed the two. Charlie’s project topped the bill for us with his submission his ‘En Plein Aire’.

“His exploration into the life of Churchill as a painter, his mood boards, sketches, and samples lead us into a sublime journey which we enjoyed so much we didn’t want to leave. Charlie is a very worthy winner, and we are looking forward to having him work with us at Pentland Brands.”

James Pegg, Lecturer in Fashion Design at the University of Salford, said: “It is exciting to see Charlie be recognised for his captivating submission through this Global Artsthread/Pentland competition. To be seen by such large industry players at this moment of his career will give him many wonderful opportunities moving forwards.

“For Jaymi Lyon to also be given an honourable mention for her submission shows the strength of all our students on the Fashion Design course”.
