A second year student on our BA Photography course has been named a finalist at the upcoming North West Football Awards against industry heavyweights.

Alisha Webster, 20, from Wythenshawe has been named as a finalist in the Football Journalist of the Season category alongside seasoned veterans Mike Keegan (former North West football reporter for the Daily Mail), James Ducker (Northern Football Correspondent at The Daily Telegraph), and Jon Colman (Sports reporter at The Cumberland News).

Mike, James and Jon all have at least two decades of experience working in sports journalism, making Alisha the youngest nominee in this category.

Alisha has been working in sports journalism for the last year, volunteering as a photographer at local football clubs Wythenshawe Town and Wythenshawe Amateurs, as well as writing for the women’s football website, Since 71.

On being nominated for the award, Alisha said: “To be where I am right now, it’s shocking to me, but I do feel a sense of pride, and to be able to go to that awards night on Monday, it’s crazy!

“I’ve seen my competition. They are journalists who I’ve actually read the work of, and I think that they are all amazing.

“It’s a bit nerve-wracking being nominated in the same category as them, but I’m so proud of myself to be honest!”

Alisha’s passion for football started at an early age, when her dad, Craig, bought her a Manchester City season ticket. At the time, Alisha was just two-months old.

In 2025, Craig passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer. In tribute to him, this summer, alongside her friend Venetia, Alisha took part in Cancer Research UK's 5k fun run Race for Life. In total, she raised over £1000 for cancer charities.

Alisha said: “My dad was a massive Manchester City fan. He took me to the men’s games and the women’s games, constantly filling my life with football.

“That’s what really inspired me. He knew everything, and I think I picked that up from my dad, it’s what made me really want to get into journalism.”

The North West Football Awards take place this Monday 2 November, with awards up for grabs in 23 different categories. Guests in attendance include Manchester City goalkeeper, Gianluigi Donnarumma, as well as the club’s former manager, Pep Guardiola.
