Master's PR student shares industry insights in new podcast for students
MA Public Relations student Deekshima Khanna has created a podcast specially designed to help PR students understand the industry.
With six episodes published, Nuances of PR, creates a platform for Salford students to understand more about the technical operations of the industry, alongside the theory they might learn on their course.
Originally from India, Deekshima brings with her a wealth of knowledge about the international market. After working for eight years in various public relations agencies, she worked for high-profile clients like Dominos, Popeyes and Malaysian Airlines. With this vast education, Deekshima moved across the world to tackle the next big step in her career, the UK's public relations industry.
She is studying for her second postgraduate degree after obtaining her first master's in Communication for Development at the Xavier Institute of Communications in Mumbai.
Deekshima said: “I really wanted to go into advertising, at the very early phase of my life, I just got a job at a PR agency, and I was like okay let me give it a shot, and then that’s how the journey started.”
Now, she intends to share her knowledge with a wider audience, focusing on what she learnt outside of education, so that future and current students can be ready for the ever-changing climate of public relations once they graduate. Deekshima’s experience in the highs, lows and crises of working in PR are often reflected in each episode through her clarity and personal anecdotes.
Deekshima added: “What I understood from my first masters, and then my second masters, and my work experience, is that what we are studying is really different from what we do when we are out there, on ground, in the industry.”
Each episode offers part of Deekshima’s journey and experience, as well as practical advice. Formatted into bite-size breakdowns, the content of each episode ranges from a step-by-step guide on creating a press release, to how an agency might create a contract with social media influencers.
The podcast is currently available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts for all students to listen to.
