SPD Stories, Meet Chris

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you do at SPD

I am the head of programmes and events at Salford Professional Development. I oversee the research and development of new and existing training programmes and conferences and the delivery of the production schedule.

Can you name your most memorable highlight at SPD?

My most memorable highlight was the delivery of SPD's Nursing Conference where the profile of the speakers drew in not only a high volume of delegates but also the local media and press.

Why did you choose a career in Production and Events?

Initially, I joined Salford Professional Development in a Sales and Marketing role where I built successful relationships with industry associations to promote large-scale events. Through this activity, my contacts that were seen as sector-specific thought leaders and experts became involved in our conference delivery, resulting in me working closely with the production team. I enjoyed this side of the role and I eventually side-stepped into the programme department as a conference producer.

How do you achieve a good/work-life balance?

To achieve a good work-life balance, firstly I examine my priorities weekly and organise time slots accordingly per task in my diary ahead of set deadlines. This allows me to focus on one task at a time, avoiding distractions. Often, I take regular short breaks from the computer screen, away from my workstation to avoid prolonged sitting.

What is one piece of advice you could give to your younger self?

Working in event management and event delivery you can often experience last-minute challenges that could hinder the whole service delivery or experience. If I could give my younger self any advice it would be the importance of fostering the right mindset and believing in yourself.
