Salford Professional Development's SEND Conference took place on Thursday, June 19th, 2025, at Adelphi House. The event was met with widespread acclaim from attendees, exhibitors, and speakers alike, with Adelphi House providing the perfect setting for the SEND Conference. 

The conference was abuzz with an array of exhibitors eager to network and showcase their products to attendees. Smart Box, one of the exhibitors, shared their enthusiasm for the event, stating, “I think a lot of the talks today show the variety of topics people are here to learn about, as well as the potential for exhibitors in different areas. Also, I believe this is a great opportunity to network and meet other professionals in the field, because often we feel like we're fighting this battle on our own.”

Topics ranged from Andrew Hammond’s exploration of the origins of 150 years of assembly-line factory education and the importance of embracing neurodiversity in schools, to Jessica MacRae’s session on working towards communication-friendly schools by embedding assistive technology to support students using AAC. 

Sherann Hillman MBE discussed inclusive leadership and its role in improving outcomes for children and families, while Vanessa Jenkins shared insights on becoming a trauma-informed school to create nurturing environments for children who have experienced trauma. 

Laura Lawton provided a heartfelt parent’s perspective on navigating the SEND education system and the challenges families face in securing support. Lorenza Pye addressed communication gaps and the importance of sign language in schools, debunking myths and offering teaching strategies. 

Stephen Steinhaus spoke about innovative, high-quality alternative provision as a means to meet the needs of vulnerable students, followed by a panel discussion featuring Jessica MacRae, Sherann Hillman, Lorenza Pye, Stephen Steinhaus, Vanessa Jenkins, Joanne Spurgeon, and Melanie Appleyard, focusing on tackling challenging behaviour and supporting educators. 

Melanie Appleyard’s presentation highlighted the benefits of emotional wellbeing for children and adults, exploring how early emotional support fosters resilience, and Joanne Spurgeon detailed the crucial steps schools should take to support pupils through transitions out of full-time education. 

The day offered numerous networking opportunities, allowing delegates from across the country to share ideas and engage with colleagues and other professionals.
