Biography
I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Nottingham, a PhD in Acoustics from the University of Liverpool and I'm a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the Institute of Acoustics.
I moved to Salford in 2004 prior to which I was a Research Fellow and the head of acoustics consultancy at the University of Liverpool. I have also worked at GEC for three years after I graduated from Nottingham in 1982 and as an acoustic consultant for four years after I finished my PhD in 1989. I have specialized in engineering acoustics and vibration since completing my degree and am now Director of the Acoustics Research Centre and Director of the Acoustics Laboratories at Salford.
Like a lot of acousticians, I have an interest in music and I play piano in a jazz quartet and occasionally write songs. I’m also a qualified teacher of the Alexander Technique.
Teaching
I teach on:
BEng Audio Acoustics
BSc Professional Sound and Video Technology
MSc Audio Acoustics
MSc Environmental Acoustics
Institute of Acoustics Diploma
Research Interests
Vibro-acoustics – including NVH, measurement methods specializing in in-situ measurements, sound insulation
Structure-borne sound – specializing in structure-borne sound source characterization, measurement and prediction
Virtual Acoustic Prototypes – auralization of machines based on measured or modeled properties
Low Frequency Noise and vibration – guidelines for environmental low frequency noise, measurement and assessment of environmental vibration.
