Course Summary

This module will offer you the opportunity to develop the advanced knowledge, understanding and skills to professionally care for a patient with inflammatory bowel disease.  You will be able to take advantage of blended learning with online study and tutorial support in addition to the added benefit of using up to date media facilities.

The online material, blogs and discussion is facilitated by clinical specialists working in local NHS Trusts.

Accreditation for Prior Experiential Learning (APEL)

We welcome applications from students who may not have formal/traditional entry criteria but who have relevant experience or the ability to pursue the course successfully.

The Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) process could help you to make your work and life experience count. The APL process can be used for entry onto courses or to give you exemptions from parts of your course.

Two forms of APL may be used for entry: the Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

English Language Requirements

International applicants will be required to show a proficiency in English. An IELTS score of 6.0 (no element below 5.5) is proof of this.

Suitable For

Members of the disciplinary team (working with patients who have inflammatory bowel disease)

Registered nurses with an interest in inflammatory bowel disease, either at ward level or working as a specialist nurse.

You must be able to demonstrate that they have had experience caring for patients with inflammatory bowel disease and continue to have regular contact throughout the module.

Ability to study at degree level demonstrated through previous CPD.

Work in a clinical environment where you have the opportunity to care for patients with inflammatory bowel disease.

Applying for post qualifying Health and Social Care single modules

All applications for post qualifying health and social care modules are made directly to the University.

If you are self funding or your workplace is funding your programme of study or single module, please complete the appropriate application form and send directly to the University. If workplace funded, you will also need to supply a letter from your Trust stating that they will be funding your study.


This module  is delivered online on a part time basis. The content of each unit, is supported with interactive lectures, web based tutorials and blogs. It is anticipated that you will attend university for one day at the beginning and end of the module

It is anticipated that this module will prepare healthcare professionals to further develop their knowledge in order to engage as members of the inflammatory bowel multidisciplinary team and nurses for practice at specialist nurse level whether the nurse is looking for a specialist nurse post or is seeking a specialist nurse role in the near future.
