Media students

Meeting our applicants is one of the best parts of our jobs as admissions tutors in the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology. Normally at this time of the year we'd be welcoming you onto campus for a face to face interview or audition. We’d provide you with an overview of the course and take you around our amazing facilities at New Adelphi or MediaCityUK before the interview or audition for your chosen course.

Our campus is open, and we’re teaching face-to-face, but to reduce the volume of people on campus and keep our staff, students and visitors safe, we are doing things slightly differently this year.

As one of our applicants, we're really keen to find out more about what you’re passionate about and to see some of the work you have spent time creating, so instead of interviewing you this year, we'd like you to provide us with an online portfolio or audition instead. 

To find out what you need to do, we have put together some course specific guidance below as well as some useful FAQs to help you take the next steps in your application process.

BA (Hons) Animation/with Foundation Year (W615/W617)

Thank you for your application and congratulations on receiving a conditional offer. While we can’t invite you onto campus quite yet, we still want to learn more about you, your skills and your interests.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio.   

A well-considered portfolio says a lot about an applicant and their work. Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement but to allow you to demonstrate your creative potential. In general terms however we would expect to see an assortment of the following examples: 

  • Sketchbooks, notebooks and development sheets demonstrating the visual development of ideas and concepts (scanned)

  • Examples of design/idea development/storyboards/comics which may include animatics, character development, sequential drawing

  • Examples of experience with animation software

  • Character, environment, props and puppets traditional and digital

  • A range of approaches to observational and life drawing both digital and traditional

  • Essays, written reports or blogs etc. demonstrating an interest in narrative, drawing, image making and contemporary animation

We are not only interested in college work, but personal work completed outside of your college course as well. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant.  

What format does this need to be in?  

Please prepare images of your work as an optimised PDF or a folder of high quality jpegs. 

You may also include hyperlinks to your online platforms such as: Instagram, ArtStation, DeviantArt, WordPress, Blogger and for moving image YouTube or Vimeo link.  

As a rough guide we would expect to see an online portfolio of around a dozen pages of work featuring any or a mixture of the above-mentioned themes and media. 

What am I being assessed on?   

We are looking for applicants that are enthusiastic about the subject. At this stage in your education we are much more interested in ideas development, work in progress and drawing skills rather than completed polished projects.  

You will be assessed on your creative potential and ability to contribute towards the animation production cycle.

BA (Hons) Comedy Writing and Performance (W890)

Thank you for your application and congratulations on receiving a conditional offer. While we can’t invite you onto campus quite yet, we still want to learn more about you, your skills and your interests.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio.  The purpose of a portfolio is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the programme you are applying for, allowing us to determine whether this is your best choice. In general, we are looking for a creative person with a strong interest and passion for comedy, theatre, media and performance. In your portfolio we would expect to see the following:

  • One piece of academic writing, which should demonstrate your ability to analyse and evaluate your work or the work of others. This can be something you have produced on your current course. Alternatively, you can write a 300 to 500-word essay on a practitioner of your choice, discussing their key ideas and techniques 

  • Two minute monologue, please submit a two-minute monologue. The text may be drawn from any play, film or radio script. This can be from any genre and period you choose

  • Self-Recording – please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you discuss your choice of audition piece, your interest in comedy and performance and your reasons for applying to this course, along with any experience you already have in this area

What format does this need to be in?

  • Your academic writing can be provided as a word document to us or a link, if this is available online 

  • All visually recorded work should be submitted as an MP4 or windows media file

What am I being assessed on?  

  • Your ability to analyse and evaluate performance work in a written format  

  • Your acting ability

  • Your engagement and understanding of your chosen monologue along with your interest in the course content during the self-recording

BA (Hons) Costume Design/with Foundation Year (W450/W451)

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio. The purpose of a portfolio is for you to tell us more about your experience, skills and interest in the programme you are applying for. We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant’s creativity this can be from: 

  • Sketchbooks from previous study of the subject area which show developmental thinking and reasonable interest and ability in traditional drawing skill 

  • A small selection of examples of any garments and/or accessories you’ve made

We are looking for applicants to have: 

  • Enthusiasm for costume and related subjects e.g. art, literature, performance, theatre, history/conservation  

  • Evidence of technical knowledge or design skill: this may be within previous costume/textile art & design projects, work-experience or personal projects undertaken

BA (Hons) Dance (W500)

Thank you for your application and congratulations on receiving a conditional offer. While we can’t invite you onto campus quite yet, we still want to learn more about you, your skills and your interests.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio of your work, which includes a solo performance and a self-recording.

Solo Performance – This should be a dance piece of two minutes. You can perform in contemporary, ballet, lyrical or dance fusion (blending popular dance forms with one of the mentioned styles). You can choose appropriate sound accompaniment, text, music, sound effects etc. or perform in silence if preferred.  Props should be to a minimum and only if entirely necessary.   

Self-recording - We would also like you to tell us a little about yourself, your hobbies, the place where you live, your school or college, and your job.  If you have experience of working in performance, not just professionally but in any way, tell us about it.  Tell us about which artists, e.g. choreographers, directors, musicians, writers etc. you find inspirational. You don’t have to talk about all of these; just the things you think will be interesting.  Then tell us why you want to come to Salford to study and why you want to come on this programme.  For this part of the recording, we suggest that you get whoever is operating the camera to concentrate on your upper body and face (a medium close-up shot). 

What format does this need to be in? 

You can upload your film to Vimeo, YouTube or a similar site 

What am I being assessed on? 

It is your performance we are interested in, not how the piece is filmed. Get your camera-person to concentrate on you.  If you are doing a piece which involves a lot of moving around, set the camera at the widest possible frame.

BA (Hons) Digital Media/with Foundation Year (A8J7/A8J8)

The purpose of a portfolio is to let us know more about the experience, skills, and interest of applicants to the programme. In general, we are looking for a creative person with a strong interest and passion for engaging with existing and emergent digital technologies, shaping the ways in which they are used in multiple design contexts. Consequently, we would like to see examples of work of any of the following: 

  • Sketchbooks, notebooks and other material demonstrating visual development of ideas and concepts 

  • Examples of design work such as illustrations, logos and graphic design pieces, produced digitally or non-digitally

  • Examples of web development, including design and/or programming (HTML, CSS, Javascript)

  • Edited videos, motion graphics or animations

  • Games concepts or prototypes produced with any game engine or framework 

  • Essays, written reports or blogs evidencing an interest in digital media design

We are not only interested in college work but personal work completed outside of your college course. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant.

You will be assessed on your creative potential, experience and interest towards digital media design and production.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a mood board for the spring summer season for 2021.  This can be any area of fashion industry (women's, men's, accessories or beauty) and it should include colour inspiration, visuals and text. 

What format does this need to be in? 

Please prepare images of your work as a PDF or PowerPoint containing descriptions of work in the images: titles, media, size and date. You may add up to 100 words of description about the work. You may also include links to your online platforms. 

What am I being assessed on?   

  • Technique and creativity and some basic understanding of fashion and/or business 

  • Knowledge of the industry/subject area

  • Communication skills

BA (Hons) Fashion Design/with Foundation Year (W225/W228)

Thank you for your application and congratulations on receiving a conditional offer. While we can’t invite you onto campus quite yet, we still want to learn more about you, your skills and your interests.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio. We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant's creativity, this could come from a number of sources and disciplines which engage with research, drawing, 3D work and use of materials. We understand some applicants may not have had a fashion specific focus on previous courses so we are happy to see examples from outside of the discipline, however it is good to see some work that considers how this work could be approached with a fashion design mindset, perhaps through application to the body or clothing. 

What format does this need to be in? 

Typically, a digital portfolio should be roughly 15 to 20 pages and show work from 2-3 projects, including any that are a work in progress. Ideally this will be sent as a link to either a website or platform such as issuu.com where you can upload a pdf. Please ensure that we do not need a password to view the work. 

What am I being assessed on?   

When assessing a portfolio we like to see a process and flow of ideas, not simply initial research and final outcome, but the development of an idea from beginning to end. How you think throughout this path is a great way of seeing the way you work.

BA (Hons) Fashion Image Making and Styling/with Foundation Year (W227/W229)

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio.  Within your portfolio we are looking for the following: 

  • Examples of concept and idea development, how you start with a concept and see it through to completion, the processes involved in this, it’s not all about the final image we need to see evidence of the journey 

  • Examples of photography 

  • Research, this is key to backing up concepts and ideas. We need to see evidence of directional research, magazines you like, photographers, stylists, examples of art direction/layouts that inspires you 

  • Evidence of experimentation. We are a directional course that works at the cutting edge of what fashion image making represents. We would love to see evidence of you striving forward and creating unique and contemporary images

  • Essays, written reports or blogs etc. demonstrating an interest in fashion, photography and contemporary culture that influences our creative outputs – art, politics, sustainability etc. 

What format does this need to be in? 

Please prepare images of your work as a PDF or a folder of high quality jpegs. Present your work logically – titles, chronological order, professional and easy to navigate. 

You may also include links to your online platforms such as: Instagram, blogs, websites, YouTube or Vimeo etc. 

As a rough guide we would expect to see an online portfolio of around 36-40 pages/slides of work featuring examples of the above. Remember this is just a guide, those wishing to show more images, examples of different media or multiple documents are encouraged to submit. If you have experience with programmes such as InDesign, show us this, create a magazine of your work, showcase your skills. We are looking for the next generation of creative image makers and thinkers. 

We are not only interested in college work, but personal work completed outside of your college course as well. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant. If you have worked in industry or set up a blog/Instagram showcasing your interests please share this with us.

What am I being assessed on?   

We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic about the subject. FIMS is a unique course highly respected in the field, evidence your understanding of the programmes philosophy, ethos and standing in today’s world of fashion image making.  

Personality, enthusiasm, passion and dedication are all critical characteristics that we look for in our prospective students. Projects demonstrating good visual communication skills are required and investigation and development of creative ideas should be evident in your work. An interest in photography, styling and image making is essential. 

You will be assessed on the skills acquired on your previous course, your technical ability, concept development and research and an emerging personal aesthetic, originality, interest in fashion, art and contemporary/directional image making which are all showcased in your portfolio.

This year we are looking for applicants to provide us with a portfolio.   A well-considered portfolio says a lot about an applicant and their work. Our guidance is not meant to limit your creative statement but to allow you to demonstrate your creative potential. In general terms however we would expect to an assortment of the following examples:

  • Films 

  • Scripts

  • Fabricated props 

  • Research documents

  • Essays

  • Podcasts and/or audio work

  • Design portfolios

We are not only interested in college work, but personal work completed outside of your college course as well. You may have other work that you wish to include that is not listed above so please do send it if you feel it is relevant. We advise though that you go for quality over quantity.

What format does this need to be in?  

Ideally your content will be web-based and we recommend sending a link of your work rather than trying to transfer files. We're happy to review work on online platforms such as Instagram, ArtStation, DeviantArt, WordPress, Blogger and for moving image YouTube or Vimeo link.  

Ideally you will have two or three pieces of work to submit, showing your skills as a film maker and a diversity in genres. However, if you have one piece of work that shows this then this will be acceptable. As stated above go for quality, show us your best work and this can be work that you have completed outside of college. 

What am I being assessed on?   

We are looking at whether the content of your portfolio is relevant to Film Production. We will also be looking at the level of skill involved in one area of Film Production, this could be in writing, cinematography, editing, sound, directing, producing, production design and VFX.

We are looking to see strong examples of an applicant’s creativity this can be from sketchbooks from previous study of the subject area, which show your ability in visual observation and developmental thinking.  

We are looking for applicants to be able to demonstrate: 

  • Enthusiasm for the subject and related subjects e.g. art, literature, performance, exhibition design/spatial design or photography

  • Evidence of good visual communication skill, previous design/art projects, a work-placement or any independent and more personal projects undertaken

  • Knowledge of/ability in relevant technology and practices, CAD/Technical drawing/theatre plans etc. 

  • Evidence of working in 3D, this may be model making

The portfolio should demonstrate previous work in one of the following two areas: 

Creative Arts Practice 

Your portfolio may include some of the following content. Please understanding that this does not have to be digital art, we are very interested to see evidence of work that is more traditional in nature.

Computer Science

We are looking for applicants with aptitude in either creative arts practice or computer science . At this stage in your education we are much more interested in traditional practice, engagement, exploration and work in progress rather than completed polished projects.

  • Two minute monologue, please submit a two-minute monologue. The text may be drawn from any play, film or radio script. This can be from any genre and period you choose

  • Self-Recording, please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you discuss your choice of audition piece, your interest in media and performance and your reasons for applying to this course, along with any experience you already have in this area.

  • Portfolio - we are looking for applicants to demonstrate an understanding of the post production process and include a range of examples to demonstrate an appreciation of editing and VFX.  This could include edited audio and/or video examples, photographs, drawing etc. to show the design of editing and VFX sequences. 
  • Storyboard - please produce a storyboard that outlines an editing sequence that includes the use of VFX shots.

  • Electronic Portfolio, some recent examples of your practical theatre project work (up to three projects) submitted as an electronic portfolio. This could include images, drawings and some descriptive overview about the project and the role you took. If you have no recent personal practical experience, you can submit examples of performances you have seen with information about how the work has shaped your interest in the theatre production. 

  • Self Recording, please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you explore why you would like to spend three years studying Technical Theatre at University of Salford.

In general, we are looking for a creative person with a strong interest and passion for theatre and performance. In your portfolio we would expect to see the following:

One piece of academic writing, which should demonstrate your ability to analyse and evaluate your work or the work of others. This can be something that you have produced on your current course or you can choose to write a new piece of work.  This needs be approximately 300-500 words, write about a theatre practitioner or playwright of your choice (e.g. Stanislavsky, Brecht, Artaud). 

  • Describe the form of theatre they pioneered and its specific characteristics 

  • Describe any theatrical techniques they invented

  • Refer to any plays, playwrights or performances associated with your chosen practitioner to show how these worked in practice 

Two minute monologue, please submit a two-minute monologue. The text may be drawn from any play of your choice, tragedy or comedy, classical or contemporary. 

Self-Recording, please provide a recording, no more than three minutes long in which you discuss your choice of audition piece, your interest in theatre and performance and your reasons for applying to this course, along with any experience you already have in this area. 

What format does this need to be in?

  • Your academic writing can be provided as a word document to us or a link, if this is available online 

  • All visually recorded work should be submitted as an MP4 or windows media file  

What am I being assessed on?  

  • Your ability to analyse and evaluate performance work in a written format

  • Your acting ability

  • Your engagement and understanding of your chosen monologue along with your interest in the course content during the self-tape

How do I submit my portfolio? 

Please email artdes-onlineportfolios@salford.ac.uk when you are ready to submit your portfolio. Please include your name and the course you've applied for in the subject line. In the content of the email, please include the below: 

  • Full name 

  • UCAS Number (if applicable) 

  • Application ID (as per your email) 

  • URL for your portfolio (if relevant)

  • Any additional documents 

  • In submitting this portfolio, I (the applicant), confirm that all images/documents are my own work.

When will I hear back? 

You have three weeks to send the requested work to us, we will send you a reminder a week before your deadline. 

We are aiming to have decisions back to applicants within two weeks of your submission deadline, subject to UCAS deadlines.

I’ve received a conditional offer, what do I do now?

If you have received a conditional offer requesting a portfolio for a course, please have a read through the course specific information above clearly.  This information will guide you through the next steps of your application. 

How do I submit my portfolio?

Does this need to be my own work?

Yes, we are looking for examples of your work and you will be asked to confirm that the documents/images are your own when you submit.  If you are submitting work that has been done as part of a group project please confirm what sections you have contributed to and how. 

What if I can't send my portfolio to you in time?

If you are having any difficulties submitting your portfolio, within the three week timeframe please contact us on artdes-onlineportfolios@salford.ac.uk and we will be happy to support you in this process.

What if I’ve applied for two courses with the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology?

If you have applied for more than one course within the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology you will receive a decision for each course.  This means you may have a conditional offer for more than one course.  Please ensure you submit your portfolio tailored to the course or courses that you have received the offers for. 

What happens if my portfolio is unsuccessful?

If your portfolio falls below the standard that we are looking for then we will look to see if we can offer you an alternative course.  The decision will be updated on UCAS within two weeks of your submission deadline. 

What if I no longer want to be considered for this course?

If you have changed your mind and wish to be considered for a different course, within the School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology  please contact the admissions team on admissionssam@salford.ac.uk quoting your UCAS number and date of birth. 

If you would like to withdraw your choice at Salford you can do this through UCAS.
