Welcome to the University of Salford Online Open Day

Welcome!

Just like an on-campus event, when you attend our Online Open Day you can attend course and general information sessions, tour the campus (virtually, at the moment) and enjoy plenty of opportunities for you to ask questions and talk to lecturers about your course and chat to students.

The event will run from 9.30am - 4pm, and you will be able to access all of the sessions we have on offer from this webpage. If you need any support, the team will be on hand throughout the event to help using the live chat icon in the bottom right-hand corner of this page; you'll also find more information in the FAQs section below.

  • If you have any questions before or after the event, you can contact us at enquiries@salford.ac.uk or +44 (0)161 295 4545 (10am - 4pm Monday to Friday).

Campus signpost at Open Day

In order to plan your day, we have provided an Open Day guide containing information on all the sessions we have to offer. We have also listed our general sessions below for ease. There's plenty to choose from including course sessions, live sessions that take place at a dedicated time or drop-in sessions that are available any time throughout today's event. We will be recording many of today's sessions so we can send these out to you next week to re-watch. Your cameras and mics will not be enabled so you will not appear on camera but any messages posted in the chat will be recorded. If your session is being recorded and you'd prefer your chat not to be included in that, please let either the tutor of Information Desk know this, or alternatively, hold your question and comments until after the recording has stopped.

Information Desk

If you have any queries about planning your day, need help accessing your sessions or have any general course enquiry or admission questions, our team are here and happy to help. Use the live chat function in the bottom right-hand corner of your page to speak to us at any point during the event.

For more information on the system we're using - Blackboard Collaborate - take a look at the FAQs below or visit our dedicated webpage, Collaborate Ultra.

Our courses

Course presentations

Use the drop-down list below to find out when your course sessions take place - if your course has a Foundation Year or a Professional Experience option, it will be included with the main sessions. The sessions are designed to help you get to know us, so while they're informative, they are also relaxed and informal.

We know you might not be set on which course you'd like to study yet, so all courses will have two presentation times, allowing you to explore several courses should you choose to do so.

When you first enter a session, a microphone and camera test may pop up and, if prompted, please allow Collaborate (this is the software we use to run our online events) to access these or you may not be able to hear the presentation. Don't worry, no one will be able to see or hear you as we have disabled microphones and cameras.

The sessions on offer include a Welcome talk, presentations on accommodation, finance talks, disability drop-in sessions and more.

Explore our Campus

Situated just 2km from Manchester city centre, we have the best of both worlds: plenty of green space around us and the excitement of the lively city just a 20-minute walk away. We also have great transport links, with our on-campus train station, Salford Crescent, connecting you to the city centre and beyond.

Whilst we can't host you on campus for this event, there are plenty of opportunities to attend a virtual Campus Tour. You can also watch the video below and download a campus map.

FAQs

How does the online event work?

How does the Online Open Day work?
While this is an online event, you'll have the same opportunities to learn more about studying at Salford as you would at an on-campus event. his webpage your event hub for the day, so you will be able to access all of the sessions from her - please see the Open Day guide for more information. .

What system are you using for the event?
The system we’re using is called Blackboard Collaborate. Blackboard is the virtual learning environment we use at Salford, and you’ll become very familiar with it when you start your course.

How do I access the sessions?
Using Google Chrome, click on the link for the session you want to access and it will open in a new tab while leaving this event hub page open for you.

When you join your first session, you’ll be asked to add your name and that’s all you need to do. You may also see a microphone and camera test pop up the first time you open a session; when prompted, please allow Collaborate to access these or you may not be able to hear the presentation. Don't worry, no one will be able to see or hear you as we have disabled microphones and cameras.

If you experience audio problems when you enter any of the sessions, you can also dial into the session using your mobile phone. To do this, please click on the menu button in the top left-hand corner and select 'use your phone for audio'. This will provide you with a unique phone number and pin that will allow you to dial into the session.

Do I need tech to access the sessions?
You don’t need a microphone or a camera for this event, the only thing you will need is to use Google Chrome as your browser.

How do I ask questions during a talk?
During the sessions there is a chat function on the right-hand side of the screen, and you can type questions there - you won’t be able to ask questions verbally as all microphones are disabled. To access the chat function, click on the pink two arrows symbol in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen and this will open a chat box. Please be aware that any questions you type here can be seen by other participants.

Can other participants see or hear me?
No. Other participants can only see your name and any questions you enter in the chat.

Event Information

How long does the event last?
We’ll be here from 9:30am to 4pm but the length of your event depends on what you’d like to do. There's plenty to keep you occupied, and you can dip in and out as you wish! You'll find some example itineraries in the 'Plan your day' section above.

Can my parent/carer/supporter attend the event?
Yes, just as they may have attended a face to face event with you, your supporters can join the online event. We're running some Q&A sessions for parents and supporters so they can ask any questions they might have.

I need help
If you are having any technical issues or problems during the event, please use the Virtual Information Desk live chat icon to speak to a member of the team who will be able to help you.

If you’d like to get in touch with any questions after the event, drop us an email or ring us on +44 (0)161 295 4545.

Applications for 2021

How do I apply?
If you want to start your studies in 2021 (or apply for deferred entry in 2022), you can apply through UCAS from September until 15 January 2021.

Will the deadlines be different because of Covid-19?
Like so much at the moment, we don’t know. The current deadline for September 2021 entry is 15 January 2021, and once you’ve signed up to UCAS they will keep you up to date with any changes.

I need help with my personal statement
We know that you may not have been able to attend sessions at school or college about your personal statement because of everything that’s happened this year. So, we’re holding two personal statement preparation sessions during the Open Day where you can chat to the team and get some tips - find out more here

An update on Covid-19

Our campuses are open, and we are committed to providing our students with as much face-to-face teaching as possible whilst adhering to government and Public Health England advice and guidance - please visit the gov.uk website for the latest information.

The health and wellbeing of our students, staff and visitors is our top priority, and while we hope to welcome you onto campus in the near future, we will continue to run online events to help reduce the number of people on campus.
