Is there any additional maths support available to students?
MathScope is our dedicated service which is designed to help you find solutions for any type of mathematical or statistical problem you may experience during your studies. Staffed by experienced tutors, the drop-in service offers comprehensive support for students at every level.
What does a standard week look like?
Our mathematics students can expect three hours of in-contact teaching for each module they are studying. This will total 18 hours of in-contact teaching normally split into two full days and two half days. The University tries to ensure one full day without teaching, and there is no teaching on Wednesday afternoons.
Will I struggle with the course if I have not done Further Maths A Level?
For our maths course we have a mixture of students, some with further maths, but most who have not. Much of the first trimester is spent consolidating the material from A-Level to ensure everyone is at the same level. Reviewing your A-Level (or equivalent) material will give you a head start in this.
For A-level study I use a Casio ClassWiz FX-991EX calculator. Will I need a more sophisticated calculator for the course?
Calculators used for A-level study will be absolute fine. Students are not allowed to use programmable calculators during exams.
Will the university help me to find work experience and industry placements?
Whilst students are responsible for securing their own work experience and industry placements, our tutors will guide and support you through the process. Industry experience not only enables you to apply your knowledge in real-world situations but allows you to form those vital connections early on in your career. We have links with a range of leading organisations and, where possible, will assist students in securing placements.
What career opportunities will be open to me when I graduate?
Our mathematics students graduate with a strong knowledge base and understanding of how mathematical and scientific methods can be applied to real-world problem-solving. Our alumni have secured roles working in a range of sectors, from finance and investments to meteorology to engineering.
