What to do if I am worried?
Salford University is committed to providing a safe environment for all our students, and keeping them free from harm, abuse or neglect.
Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and we can all play a part in keeping our community safe
Types of abuse can include:
- Physical abuse – deliberate physical injury or harm (e.g. punching, slapping etc.)
- Emotional abuse – abuse that has a negative impact on emotional wellbeing (e.g. threats, blackmail, controlling behaviour)
- Sexual abuse (including rape, sexual assault, unwanted touching etc.)
- Neglect or self-neglect
- Domestic abuse – unhealthy relationships
- Forced marriage or so -called ‘honour’ violence
- Female Genital Mutilation
- Bullying, harassment or hate crimes
- Radicalisation and extremism
You might consider someone is being abused or harmed because:
- You see or hear extreme changes in character – is someone becoming withdrawn, aggressive, frightened or dismissive?;
- You may see or hear someone talking about intending to commit suicide;
- Someone is misusing alcohol or drugs, including ‘legal highs’;
- Someone doesn’t want to go home, or has gone missing;
- Someone is in a controlling or unhealthy relationship;
- Someone is self-harming, or appears stressed, anxious or depressed;
- Someone is living in poor housing, or is homeless;
- Someone tells you something is happening or happened to them that could constitute abuse.
What should I do if I am worried about myself or my friend?
Protect yourself. Keep a look out for your friends. If you are made aware of abuse, try to listen sensitively and without judgment. Don’t be worried about asking for help or raising your concerns; we will listen to you, and we will take you seriously.
