Self-Care at University: A Quick Guide

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably just started a new year at university. University is an exciting journey where you can make new friends, learn new things, go on new adventures and discover yourself in the process. But there might be times when you’re struggling with these things and feel like you’re doing university ‘wrong’. Well, I’m here to tell you that there’s no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ university experience; everybody’s journey is different and full of ups and downs.
Being surrounded by more people at university means more opportunity to make friends; but it can also mean we might be more likely to feel a little lonely in a sea of students. This is perfectly normal and there are lots of opportunities at university to meet and connect with new people. There is also a misconception that students who commute to university will find it harder to make friends, but from personal experience I have found this is not true. Joining a society is a good place to start for making friends, whether you commute in to university or live in accommodation.
There are a range of societies including ones specific to your subject, for example the Law Society. These can help you get to know people on your course. You can also join societies that help fundraise for charity. Fundraising with others is a fantastic way to meet new people and help a great cause at the same time. Taking care of your health is also important. Never underestimate the power of exercise! It’s a great way to stay fit and meet new people in the process. Team Salford have a great initiative called ‘Give Sport a Go’ which hold weekly sessions on all kinds of stuff from yoga to cheerleading. These sessions are free and there’s no pressure to keep attending them, you can just go along and see what takes your fancy.
Starting university and meeting new people can be stressful, but there are a number of really useful services that can provide you with support. For example, the Student Union have student volunteers who you can go and talk to about any concerns you might have. The service is called ‘Rafiki’ and you can find them in University House on the Lower Ground Floor. The university also has wellbeing advisors who you can make an appointment with to talk to about any personal issues you may have. You can reach them on 0161 295 0023. University can have its ups and downs, but Salford is here to both celebrate your successes and support you if you find yourself struggling. And even if you feel like you’re alone, remember that there’s a whole range of services available to help you.
