Over 300 Salford students compete in first ever multi-sport varsity event
Over 300 competing Salford students and scores of fans donned their blue and yellow colours last week as Salford took on Chester University in our first ever multi-sport varsity event.
Fans and players travelled to the historic city of Chester to take part in 20 fixtures across a range of sports, including fencing, ultimate frisbee, rowing and much more.
Despite starting the day as underdog, Salford took an early lead winning six of the first nine fixtures, but any advantage was overturned in the afternoon when Chester came back to win 12-8 overall.
While we lost overall, there were a number of triumphs throughout the day with the men’s basketball team coming back from a 15 point deficit to claim a tight 72 points to 71 victory and the women’s hockey team defeating a Chester side who are two leagues above them in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) competition.
Our fans also refused to have their enthusiasm dampened by the loss, chanting and supporting every team until they returned to Salford late in the evening.
Special thanks go to all the players for their hard work and preparation and to the Students’ Union staff for organising the event.
Watch this Students’ Union video of the day below and check out what some of our Salford students said reflecting on their varsity experience in the quotes below:
“Great day and it was lovely to see Salford University so united!”

“Fun day out, brought different groups of students & sports together in a relaxed atmosphere."
“An experience you have to be part of.”
