Uncovering a hidden past

On Wednesday 4 July at 2pm Working Class Movement Library (WCML) joins with our English and Politics students for a finale event celebrating our collaborative project Invisible Histories – seeing the hidden, hearing the unheard.

This project, funded by a grant from the Salford Advantage Fund, has focused on the Library’s amazing collections relating to the Spanish Civil War, which include posters, photographs, sketches, and letters from men from Greater Manchester who went out to fight to defend the Republican government against the fascist army of General Franco.

Project funding has enabled WCML to have professionally digitised a wide range of archive material relating to the Spanish Civil War, and student volunteers have supplemented this by learning new skills around selecting and digitising material. Students have also researched and responded to the material in a range of creative ways, from blog postings to poetry.

There will be displays of original items on the day, alongside readings of the students’ responses to these. The project archivist Heather Roberts will also be on hand to talk about the conservation lessons we have learned along the way.

The event is free, with light refreshments available.
