The Institute of Education at UCL publishes our PhD Student’s Paper

Postgraduate student Adam Hart has published a paper for the London Review of Education in the leading institute of education at UCL.

The paper explores an ongoing project to develop a freeware resource for music composition in the primary classroom. Adam explains: “This paper is about a freeware music composition app, Graphick Score, which I've been developing for my research. I wanted to make something that allowed young children to sketch out musical ideas in an exploratory and creative way, so my environment uses images and painting tools linked to sounds and musical gestures. I've done a lot of research in the classroom with this resource as I've been developing it, in schools across the North West, so I've got a lot of compositions that children have made with it in their music lessons. With the competing pressures of core subjects and shortages of funding and specialist teaching staff, we're at a difficult time now for music education.”

Additionally, The UCL is said to have “broken a new ground” by embedding a video in this research paper as this was never done previously; Adam said: “the text contains hyperlinks to videos on the London Review of Education YouTube account of short compositions made by the pupils with the programme, so it uses digital media as references. This is the first time they've done this, and the editor described it as breaking new ground.”
