Salford English and Creative Writing Student performs with British Council in Germany

English and Creative Writing student Jardel Rodrigues has been chosen by The British Council to represent the poetry of Manchester, at the British Council’s 2019 Literature Seminar in Berlin.

Poet and performer Rodrigues performed his poem, Barbirolli Square, for an audience of German poetry enthusiasts, critics, scholars and literary media. The poem told the story of the complex and emotional relationship between Manchester and its citizens.

Rodrigues is hoping to publish a book of poetry in 2019, encompassing the themes of working-class-identity, mancuianism and self-hate. As a Level 4 student in English and Creative Writing, Rodrigues says the course is allowing him to "delve deeper into some of the established rules, and to have a more informed opinion" on his craft. Although he adds that "rules are meant to be broken."

Creative Writing Programme Leader David Savill says, "Salford University is building a reputation as a place where performance poets can thrive. The English and Creative Writing course embraces the contemporary and experimental, alongside the traditional. In the past few years, we’ve been blown away by the young talent on our doorstep. The teaching team feel privileged to be working with students like Jardel."

In Berlin, Rodrigues performed alongside Forward and Costa prize winner, Michael Symmons Roberts.
