Manchester Beer Week
Manchester Beer Week runs between 29th June and the 8th July. As part of this, Marble Brewery are running two workshops for students to explore topics related to the brewing industry.
How does science play a role in brewing? Could your studies lead you to a career in the most fun industry imaginable? Would you like to make or taste beer for a living? Use your engineering qualifications to improve its packaging? Or perhaps use your lab analysis skills to ensure its perfection? STEM has so many possible applications in the world of brewing, come and meet some of the people who have turned their STEM qualifications into their brewing dreams.
This would suit students that are studying STEM subjects and anyone with an interest in biochemistry and engineering
Joseph Ince, Head Brewer Marble Beers – Joe studied Forensic Science and Criminology before moving into brewing. Formerly of Magic Rock Brewing Co and Buxton Brewery, and continues to study brewing sciences for his Diploma in Brewing.
Katie Marriot, Director Nomadic Beers
Jaega Wise, Head Brewer Wild Card Brewery Jaega’s background is in the field of Chemical Engineering. Jaega first worked as a Process Technician for General Electric’s Water Division before switching to international chemical import & trading. Combining expertise in mathematics, engineering & logistics Jaega leads the brewing team at Wild Card.
Branding Futures - looking at how we brand beer, communicating ideas with one image in a sea of images, negotiating and implementing inclusive artwork. Workshops will centre around designing an artwork for a beer with exists and how the story is built.
This would suit design and art students, and any students that are interested in media and advertising
Melissa Cole - Beer Writer. Award-winning writer Melissa is widely acknowledged as one of the UK’s leading beer & food experts. Renowned for her insightful and engaging writing style, sense of humour and ability to translate complicated beer jargon into something everyone can understand, she’s already seen success with her debut book Let Me Tell You About Beer. However, it doesn’t stop there, Melissa truly immerses herself in the world of beer; from judging beer competitions from Amsterdam to Rio and Denver to Dublin to brewing beers with some of the world’s most respected brewers like Odell, Goose Island and Fuller’s, there’s not much she doesn’t get her hands dirty doing when it comes to the beer game. She’s also sought after by restaurants like the world-famous St John to help construct beer lists and curates the beer offering at some of the hottest food event tickets in town like Meatopia and Borough Market.
Jan Barker - Freelance graphic designer, Marble Beers. Creative designer with experience across all mediums, Jan is responsible for Marble Beers identity and branding for the past 7 years.
Lily Waite, Beer Blogger and Artist. Lily is an artist and poet, whose work is primarily concerned with trans identity, trans bodies & the surrounding politics. She currently writes for We Are Beer, as well as being a Good Beer Hunting contributor. Her favourite things are the dismantling of the patriarchy and cishetero-normative systems of power, and a nice cold pale ale.
