Library completes £6.2 million development project

The £6.2 million Library Development Project is now complete following the opening of the new ground floor.

Clifford Whitworth Library now has 250 more study spaces, 75 more PCs and ten more study rooms.

As well as adding more facilities, the uplift has transformed the look and feel of the library giving you comfy furniture, improved lighting and plenty of great views over the newly-developed campus. The design celebrated the library’s central position in the park by bringing the outside inside with deckchairs, green carpets and pavilions.

David Clay, University Librarian, said that one of the main aims of the project was to provide a space where you can study in the way you want.

He said: “The design of the library lets you study in a way that suits you. On the ground floor there are three more group study rooms, open spaces which lend themselves to collaboration and a space you can design yourself by moving our wall blocks around – these can also be used as whiteboards for you to sketch out your revision and assignments.

“We’re delighted that we have finished the project and feedback from students has been really positive.”

The ground floor also has a pavilion area packed with PCs, a zoned off PC area, a meeting room that’s a shared resource for students and staff and our leisure reading collection.

Kobby Ofori, Students’ Union Vice President for Science and Technology, said that the new floor has provided space for students to spread out in.

He said: “The new ground floor refurbishment certainly provides enough room for students to be themselves.

“Everything looks so organised and well in place and the staff are also very warm and welcoming. It’s certainly an exciting time for our students to keep rising.”

The first floor was completed last September and has five group study rooms, a mixture of furniture allowing for different types of learning and two multi-use PC and teaching rooms. The second floor was finished in December 2016 and provides eight individual study rooms, a dedicated Postgraduate Research suite, one silent room and two PC suites.

Help is on hand on every floor with staffed information points on the first and second floor, staff roving throughout the library and an enquiry desk on the ground floor. You can also find the Digital IT team on our enquiry desk on weekdays from 12-2PM.

Art from our students celebrating the connection between ourselves and Peel Park can also be found across the library.

While this project may be finished, we want to continuously improve the library and will begin so by gathering your feedback about the investment in the coming months. This will help us discover whether any of your suggested tweaks or changes could make it look even better.

The work to improve the library was carried out over an 18 month period and we thank you for your patience.
