Be at your best for exams: Tips on managing stress

Now you've received your exam timetable, your upcoming exams, and assignments are probably playing on your mind a little. It’s normal to feel stressed about your University work. In fact, everyone at University probably feels the exact same way. We wanted to make sure that you do your best during exam season with these 5 tips.

- Make sure you look after your health, get plenty of sleep, eat healthily and exercise. 

- Organisation, schedule your work and don’t ignore it

- Study with friends

- If you are struggling ask your tutor that’s what they are there for

- Take time out for yourself

Looking after your health is the most important thing that you can possibly do. If your body isn’t at its peak then neither is your brain. Drink water, eat right, sleep lots, and exercise. They're a good way to make friends and you get to eat what you've cooked each week.

You’re reading this, so you must be thinking about your exams, that’s a good start. If you’re organised then that’s half the battle. At some point in our life we’ve all left our work till the last minute, it isn’t easy. Know when your exams are, know what the questions might be, know how to answer them, and know what you should be studying.

Your friends are probably feeling the pressure as well. Here’s an idea, why don’t you all go to the library for a group study session? It doesn’t matter if they are studying for exams, if they’re doing practical coursework, or writing an essay. You can all go together and get some work done as a team.

Do you have your Tutor’s email address? If you are stuck then send them an email and ask for help. They are very helpful people, but don’t expect them to reply at 07:00am Sunday morning. Again, plan ahead and don’t wait till the last minute to ask for help.

Check out the Skills for Learning website, there's more helpful stuff than you can shake a stick at. Make sure you follow the Skills for Learning blog, there is loads of information in small, easily digestible bites. 

Have a lie-in, relax, do something fun. If you study 24/7 then you have no time to recharge. You need to have a good work/life balance, don’t let University consume your life. It’s important that you study, and your work is to the best of your ability, but University should be one of the most enjoyable times of your life. Another good way to combat your exam stress is talk to your peers. You can simply take the time to connect with them regularly or start attending our Student Mental Health and Wellbeing group. This is a support group to talk to your peers about what troubling you. It takes place every Wednesday and to join you just need to email
