Are you studying without family support?

At Salford University many students disclose estrangement and seek support from the Ask Us services. Studying without a family or parental support network can be really tough, not only financially but also emotionally, which can impact significantly on student wellbeing.

Students can become estranged by choosing to disassociate themselves from a damaging or dysfunctional family relationship, or they may be disowned due to mismatched family values.

We work closely with StandAlone – a national charity supporting estranged people, to ensure what we provide is in line with current research around perceived barriers for student success. The University have signed an official pledge for provision in four areas, finance, mental health, accommodation and outreach.

This event will provide information, advice and guidance around the four pledge areas, and give students a chance to talk about what support helps them, or how things could be improved so they can reach their full potential.

We will provide free refreshments whilst you hear about:

- University support in place for Estranged Students

- PAUSE (People at University Separated or Estranged) student society

- Wellbeing and self-care advice

- Student finance including gathering evidence for SFE and accommodation

- The StandAlone pledge, and how we are achieving what we set out to do.

Feel free to come along and listen, or if you would like to feedback you will have a chance to tell us what we could be doing better as a University to support estranged students.

Book now.

The Ask Us staff will be present along with colleagues from different areas to offer their support and advice. The PAUSE group will introduce their student society and showcase the work already done to provide peer support and raise awareness.
