On completion of this programme delegates will understand:

  • The Directors responsibilities in relation to finance.
  • The importance of managing risk and return.
  • Financial terminology.
  • How to confidently engage in financial discussions.
  • The uses and limitations of the principal financial statements, the Balance Sheet (Statement of Financial Position), Profit and Loss account (Income statement) and Statement of Cash Flow.
  • The difference between cash and profit and that organisations fail due to lack of cash rather than lack of profit.
  • How to assess the value of investments using discounted cash flow techniques.
  • How to read the Report and Accounts of an organisation and what they don’t show you.
  • How management accounts differ from financial accounts and the reason for the differences.
  • How to assess financial performance and spot signs of financial distress.

Janet Grant

Janet qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Ernst and Young and has over 20 years of experience in senior management and finance director roles for recognised retailers such as WHSmiths and Littlewoods. She then followed her passion for developing people by becoming a leadership development trainer and resilience coach, working with a wide range of companies including the NHS, BAE Systems, Marketing Agencies and Housing Associations. Janet enjoys using her finance, business and personal leadership experience, combined with her coaching and training skills, to enable people and teams to develop the skills and culture they desire.

She enjoys using her skills and experience to support not for profit organisations and currently acts as a Governor for the Trafford College Group, a Trustee and Treasurer for Home-Start Trafford, Salford and Wigan plus a business mentor with the Manchester Business Growth Hub.

Janet is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants (ICAEW), the Association of Coaching (AOC) and the Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM). She is also an accredited practitioner for the Thrive RQi resilience programme plus trained in the Drake P3 behavioural profiling system.
