This challenging, lively and interactive workshop will explore how we are all fallible and can make simple mistakes regardless of our role, commitment, knowledge and skills.
The course draws on experiences ranging from aviation to health and social care to introduce the concepts of human factors. This course will offer practical tools and strategies to help maintain and sustain high levels of performance, for both individuals and the teams they work with, often under daily challenging conditions.

Topics will include:
IntroductionThe definition of Human Factors and how it applies throughout the working day. An introduction to the system model and an overview of the problems associated with simply being human.
How and why we make errorsWe will demonstrate our essential ability to miss things before our eyes and that ‘stupid’ mistakes are actually anything but. In many normal work situations we are exposed to high risks that we may not have previously considered. Stress affects us all, sometimes beneficially but frequently it can impact upon our ability to perform to our highest standards. All of these concepts are discussed and some coping strategies offered.
The effects of stressThis session focuses on the effects of stress on performance. To enhance team harmony it is vital that such pressures are understood.
Situation awarenessThis is a fundamental concept in safe, accurate daily working practice. We all ‘see the world’ from different perspectives, depending on our training, our experience and our role. It is vital we appreciate the need to check, and correct if necessary, that our perception is really the reality, and that to be an effective team player this awareness needs to be shared with our colleagues.
Decision makingWe make decisions constantly and most of them are automatic, without thinking; sometimes there is a clear rule, sometimes we have to work it out. There are benefits and pitfalls to all of these methods, which will be aired and compared. Methods of checking decisions against desired outcome will be offered.
CommunicationCommunication always figures high on the list of team problems. In this module we show why and offer simple solutions to common problems to avoid misunderstandings. There are models used for effective communicating and aids for assertiveness to overcome issues around hierarchy challenge.
Dealing with difficult peopleA popular module! This builds on assertiveness by offering tips on self-control and overcoming the stresses of dealing with challenging individuals.
Leadership & team-workingA brief journey through effective leadership behaviour and how to overcome common pitfalls in motivating people to work together. However the team must be prepared to be lead and this is also discussed. Balancing the needs of the patient, the task and the team is important in terms of patient safety and professional wellbeing. Hierarchical issues will also be discussed.
BriefingHow do we raise the situation awareness of our team and plan for the expected while preparing for the unexpected? A briefing of the team is a great starting point. The more subtle aspects of hierarchy and creating appropriate group climates will be aired.
Debriefing & FeedbackDebriefing is often accomplished when things have gone wrong but one of the signs of an effective team is the willingness to discuss what went well and what could be learned. Here we discuss the benefits and skills associated with effective debriefing and the giving and receiving of feedback.
Review and summaryThe summary draws together all the strands discussed throughout the day and relates them to the issues identified by those present at the start of the course. Participants will be asked to say what they could do differently as a result of the topics discussed during the course.
Human Factors is at the core of all aviation training and as a current pilot with a major international airline and former RAF fighter pilot Mark brings a multitude of skills to health and social care. With a broad wealth of experience in coaching individuals working in high performance and high risk professions, latterly he has been presenting engaging and interactive human factors foundation courses to junior doctors for Atrainability. The course feedback has always evaluated extremely positively. He has trained, mentored, and facilitated individuals and teams across all levels in the public and private domain.
Mark is now a pilot flying European routes. He is also a consultant providing training support to companies and institutions, carrying out training needs analysis, course design and development. He is passionate about improving the understanding of human factors, and teaching practical skills to improve patient safety, operational performance and job satisfaction.
Formerly he was a front line fighter pilot in the RAF and was subsequently selected for prestigious exchange posts at both the French and Saudi Air Force Academies, where he instructed student fighter pilots. He then commanded the Central Flying School’s basic fast jet instructor training squadron where he very successfully brought in numerous innovative training initiatives to improve communication skills and enhance individual and team performance.
