The Royal College of Nursing estimates there are 40,000 vacant nursing positions across the whole health service, a situation that has been exacerbated by a 90% reduction in applications from EU countries since the Brexit vote. As the NHS struggles to cope with growing demand, the Government has announced plans to increase the nursing workforce by 25% by creating 5,000 new training places.
This will be achieved through a combination of full-time university courses and tripling the number of nursing associates to allow existing NHS staff to re-train as nurses over a four year period.
The 285,000 nurses across the NHS provide an essential link between different organisations as the service moves towards a model based on prevention and closer co-operation. Increased recruitment, retention and retraining of nurses is vital as the carries out the changes set out by Sustainability and Transformation Partnerships.
Join us for the Nursing Conference where experts from across the health service will explain how the NHS can overcome existing challenges and how the role of the nurse will change in the coming years.
