Set up multi-factor authentication

When you sign into your University account for the first time, you will be asked to register some additional information to ensure your account is kept safe. It is important to set up multi factor authentication for your account at the earliest opportunity.

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) requires a second form of authentication when logging in to Microsoft 365 and its tools, the Student Hub and the Student Portal. It is required when you're accessing your University account from a new device, a new web browser, a new location or you’ve not authenticated for 13 days.
  • Forgot your password? Self-Service Password Reset allows you to reset your password at any time, once you have MFA set up.

Access WiFi on campus - How to access the internet via WiFi on campus

Student Email - We send our emails to your University email account.

Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) - You must set up your account with this second form of authentication to access Microsoft 365 and its tools, the Student Hub, the Student Portal and to be able to reset your password.

Reset your password - Reset your password via Microsoft 365. This will reset your password for all University systems. You can also unlock your account using this link.

Blackboard - The University of Salford's virtual learning environment (VLE) where you'll find resources for your course and modules, including lecture notes and assessment details.

Check in to your academic session - With the JISC Learning Analytics and the Study Goal App. At your teaching sessions, you will be given a unique code to input into the Study Goal app to confirm your attendance. It's one way the University monitors student engagement to target support to those students who are not engaging and who may need support, so it is important that you do not share the code with others. You can also find ‘Check in…’ via the Student Hub and the Library App.

Collaborate - A web conferencing tool where staff and students can interact in an online environment in real-time. Chat using a headset and see each other using a webcam. Your lectures and tutorials may take place in a virtual classroom and sessions can be recorded by the tutor for later viewing. Watch our Blackboard Collaborate for Students video.

Microsoft Teams for online meetings - This Microsoft 365 tool allows you to communicate and collaborate with others; it combines messaging and chat, storing and sharing files, audio calls and online meetings. Teams makes it easy to meet online with your tutors and with library staff, and to share/present files during an online meeting as a piece of assessed work. Teams has a great app for your mobile devices. Find and install 'Microsoft Teams' via the app store on your devices.

LinkedIn Learning - High-quality online training for a wide range of courses. Its 'Technology' category offers training for familiar tools such as Word and Excel and extends to more specialist software such as SPSS, AutoCAD and InDesign. explore the wide range of courses to really give your skills and your CV a boost. Access our apps remotely – The Citrix Workspace service allows you to access most University applications using a remote application or browser from your own personal device – Windows and Macs. Tip: use the remote application for a better experience.

Getting help

We have lots of self-service information on the Service Portal. You can use the Self-Service Portal to answer your questions, find guides for using different systems and to log tickets with our Digital IT team. Please use the Service Portal wherever possible - it's the quickest and easiest way to receive help.

Where you don't have a University account or you've not been able to reset your account using the above information, you can contact Digital IT for IT help by phone and email. Make sure to have the following information on hand (or include it in your email): your full name, your student ID number and your mobile phone number.

Face to face help from the team is available at the Tech Bar on the first floor in Clifford Whitworth Library. It is staffed Monday to Friday, 09:00-16:00 (excluding bank holidays and the University closure period during the Winter Break). They advise you arrive before 15:30 to avoid disappointment.
