Artist Residency at University’s research lab

The University of Salford Art Collection, in collaboration with Open Eye Gallery, is looking for a photographer for a new commission based at leading research facility Energy House.

The pilot project will see an artist or photographer join the team at the facility that has the world’s first full sized two-bedroom terraced house built inside an environmentally controlled chamber.

Energy House is the University’s cutting-edge facility that explores future issues facing the housing market in the area of energy efficiency. The successful artist will be asked to create work that explores positive solutions to combat the climate crisis and what we can do in our homes to make a difference.

The work will contribute to the LOOK Photo Biennial 2022, an exhibition of work that is delivered every two years by Open Eye Gallery, with the theme for this particular year being Climate Change. It will also be acquired into the University’s permanent art collection.

Stephanie Fletcher, Assistant Curator for the University of Salford Art Collection said: This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for an artist to creatively explore an issue that is high not only on the political agenda but important to many individuals.  The climate crisis is such a complex issue and can be quite overwhelming, especially in mainstream media. We hope this commission will generate alternative narratives on the topic and bring focus on the positive solutions that are being pioneered right here in Salford.

“Energy House is a visually rich environment and will give the chosen artist a unique opportunity to collaborate with experts as they create their work.”

The deadline for expressions of interest is 20 November 2020, and the artist in residency is planned to take place between December 2020 and Spring 2021.
