MUSIC Facilities

Use any of our six main recording studios and you’ll be in an environment just like the one you’ll find in the industry. They are all built around an Audient ASP 8024 HE, the analogue mixing console used in professional studios around the world, and also contain analogue synthesisers, drum machines and everything you need for effects processing.

The spaces are designed to work for what you want to do – multiple studios can be networked using Dante interfaces, and there’s the ability to route between live room, isolation booth and the control room – giving you ultimate flexibility. You’ll also get to learn the software you’ll use when you get a job, including Logic Pro X, Pro Tools and Ableton Live.

The studios can accommodate a range of performers, from soloists to brass ensembles. One of the studios is attached to our Band Room, a large performance space that comfortably fits our brass, wind and big bands as well as the choir.

You’ll also have access to our extensive microphone collection, so you’ll know you’re recording in the best possible quality.

From podcasting and video game dialogue to radio drama and foley sound effects, this facility gives you the flexibility to produce a range of audio for your projects.

With 26 workstations for you to use, you’ll be able to bring your ideas to life in our computer suite. Each consists of an iMac, audio interface, controller keyboard and headphones, as well as all the software you’ll learn (and use in the world of work when you graduate. Logic X, Pro Tools, Ableton, Max MSP, Sibelius, Soundtoys, GRM Tools and a huge selection of Universal Audio and Waves plug-ins – the list goes on.

This is where you’ll learn how to mix and create immersive sound in 7.1 and 5.1 surround. The space is used extensively in the teaching of our Advanced Studio Composition and Advanced Audio for Media modules. 

Need somewhere to practise playing without disturbing your housemates or the neighbours? You’ll have access to 26 rehearsal spaces suitable for when you want to practise on your own, with your band or for one-to-one tuition.

You can bring your own instrument and equipment or use ours, including drumkits from DW, Sonar, and Yamaha; keyboards from Nord and Roland; guitar amplification from Mesa Boogie, Vox, Fender, Orange and Marshall; and bass amplification from Ampeg, Mark Bass and Aguillar. 

Don’t worry, all the spaces are soundproof too!

Peel Hall 

A three-hundred seat concert hall with excellent acoustics. So much so that as well as being used by our large ensembles, it’s previously been used by the BBC and other external organisations.

New Adelphi Theatre 

The 350-seat theatre features flexible seating configurations to suit a range of events and performances, both professional and student-led. It is equipped with a range of intelligent and generic lighting, a highly adaptable EM Acoustics PA system, and a high-powered Christie projector, to provide the best possible environment for enjoying the show.

Atmosphere 

Our Student Union bar and venue hosts a number of both staff and student-led performances throughout the year. 

During term time, music studio facilities are open 7 days a week, from 9 am til midnight with performance facilities open until 10pm. With the New Adelphi building in the centre of campus, just a few minutes walk from student accommodation, you won’t have to worry about transportation if you’re in a late rehearsal or recording session. We have secure storage spaces for you to keep your instrument in the building, so you won’t need to carry your equipment with you all the time. Also, our facilities remain open and available for use for much of the summer and Easter holidays

We have a diverse faculty of full-time teaching staff, from a range of musical backgrounds. Our lecturers specialise in performance, studio engineering, band leading, composition, musicology, music business, recording & production, music technology and sound & music for media, to list just a few disciplines. Many of our staff are also research active, looking into new music practices, emerging audio technologies, or music cultures, and frequently this new knowledge informs our teaching practices.

Our highest priority is to ensure that we’re following the government guidance to keep you safe on campus. This means that you may not have an opportunity to visit our campus; however, through our virtual/campus tours, you could virtually visit our Peel Park campus.

By rail

The University of Salford has a dedicated train station, Salford Crescent. Direct services run to and from Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria, as well as Blackpool, Bolton, Buxton, Blackburn, Southport, Preston and Lancaster.

By bus

Staff and current students can get around campus for free using the 50 bus. The number 50 runs every 10-15 minutes between East Didsbury and MediaCity via our Peel Park campus. You can also get to us by using services 8, 12, 26, 31, 32, X34, 36, 37, 38, 50, X61, 67, or 100. 

By car

The New Adelphi building is located in the Peel Park Campus just off the Crescent (A6). The closest campus carpark is Irwell Place car park. There are Blue Badge spaces on campus closer to the building.

Parking is chargeable 7 days a week between the hours of 9am – 6pm. After 6pm, parking is free. Please note: all university car parks us the PayByPhone App, Irwell Place has an optional Pay and Display machine.
