Postgraduate Research Online Open Day - 17 November 2021

Welcome to the University of Salford, and thank you for booking your place on our online Postgraduate Research Open Day.

Whilst we wish we were meeting in person, this event will offer all the same opportunities as an on-campus event. There will be plenty of opportunities for you to ask any questions you may have.

This webpage is your hub for the event and you will be able to access all of the sessions we have on offer from this page on the day. In the meantime, this page will provide you with all of the information you need to plan your day, including an Open Day schedule containing all session timings, as well as some helpful FAQs.

Please note this webpage is for Postgraduate Research courses only - if you are interested in a Postgraduate Taught course (including MA, MSc, PGDip, PGCert) please head to the page here

Attend sessions

We're running a number of general information sessions to help you find out more about life at Salford. The sessions on offer include a welcome and information talk, presentations on finance and student support, and drop-ins on accommodation, the library and more.

A few of the sessions will take place at a dedicated time, while others will be a drop-in service throughout the event. Please take a look at our Open Day schedule for more information on everything we have to offer and the times for each session.

Once you've made a decision on what you'd like to attend, please click on the images below to enter each session - we would recommend opening these in a new tab (right-click the image) so you don't navigate away from this page.

Explore our campus

Situated just 2km from Manchester city centre, we have the best of both worlds: plenty of green space around us with the hustle and bustle of the city just a 20-minute walk away.

We also have great transport links, with our on-campus train station, Salford Crescent, connecting you to the city centre and beyond. Explore the reasons why we love our city and get a taste for life as a student with us.

Chat with our current students

Want to find out more about studying here? You can chat with our current students and ask any questions you might have about their experiences at Salford. Click the arrow on the right to move through the student profiles.

Event FAQs

How does the event work?

This page is your event hub for the day as you will be able to access each of the sessions we have on offer from here – please note that links will not be live until 14:00 on Wednesday 17  November.

When you click on any of the session links, they'll open in a new tab, leaving this event hub page open for you. Once a session is finished, just close the tab and you'll be back on the event hub for your next activity.

The system we’re using for the event is called Blackboard Collaborate. Blackboard is the virtual learning environment we use at Salford, and you’ll become very familiar with it when you start your course.

How do I access the sessions?

Using Google Chrome, just click on the link for the session you want to access, and it will open in a new tab, leaving this event hub page open for you.

When you join your first session, you’ll be asked to add your name and that’s all you need to do. A microphone and camera test may also pop up the first time you open a session; when prompted, please allow Collaborate to access these or you may not be able to hear the presentation. Don't worry, no one will be able to see or hear you as we have not enabled microphones and cameras.

If you experience audio problems when you enter any of the sessions, you can also dial into the session using your mobile phone. To do this please click on the menu button in the top left hand corner and select 'use your phone for audio'. This will provide you with a unique phone number and pin that will allow you to dial into the session.

Do I need tech to access the sessions?

You don’t need a microphone or a camera for this event, the only thing you will need is to use Google Chrome as your browser.

How do I ask questions?

During the sessions, you will be able to type any questions into the chat function on the right-hand side of the screen – you won’t be able to ask questions verbally as all microphones are not enabled.

To access the chat function, click on the pink two arrows symbol on the bottom right-hand corner of your screen. Please be aware that any questions you type here can be seen by other participants.

Can other participants see or hear me?

No. Other participants can only see your name and any questions you type in to the chat.

How long does the event last?

We’ll be here from 15:00-18:00 but the length of your event depends on what you’d like to do. We’ve provided information on all of today’s sessions in the Open Day schedule, which you can view above.

I need technical support.

If you are having any technical issues or problems during the event, our team will be available through the live chat function on this page and will be able to help you.

If you’d like to get in touch with any questions prior to or after the event, drop us an email on or ring us on +44 (0)161 295 4545.

I have a disability and I'm unsure of how this will affect my experience during the event.

If you have a disability and need support during the event, please contact us by calling 0161 295 4545 or email to discuss your needs.

During the event, you will also have the opportunity to speak to our askUS team about disability and learner support at Salford.

For more information on the accessibility of our campus, please visit the accessibility section of our website. We have also worked closely with AccessAble to produce an assessment of our campus and facilities; you can find out more about access guides and routes across our campus on the AccessAble website.

Applying to Salford FAQs

How do I apply?

All postgraduate applications are made directly to the University of Salford via our online application form. The application process is slightly different for a number of our courses, so we’ve outlined the steps you need to follow where necessary.

While there is no set deadline for applications, we recommend that you apply at least six weeks before your preferred start date so that we have time to process your application.

When will I receive a decision from Salford?

As all applications are made directly to the University, we are able to make a decision quickly and they are usually made within six weeks of receiving your application. We will, of course, contact you once a decision has been made.

What sort of financial support am I entitled to?

UK Students

UK students are eligible to receive up to £27,265 towards a doctoral degree, if your course starts on or after the 1 August 2021. You will only start to repay this once your annual income is over the threshold amount for your repayment plan. To find out more about your eligibility and the application process, please visit the Student Finance website.

International Students

International applicants can find more information on funding their studies here. We also have scholarships available to assist you during your time at Salford. If you have any questions, please email

Will I have the opportunity to speak to my tutors one-to-one?

Unfortunately tutors will not be available during the event but our Postgraduate Research Support Team will be available to help you find the right supervisor for you and provide their contact details
