Imaging Facilities
Radiography imaging facilities.
Radiographers are highly trained health specialists who use sophisticated equipment to take images to help diagnose injury or disease. They are a vital part of hospital medical teams.
The research carried out by the Radiography team is focused on two key areas:
- Optimisation in medical imaging is particularly complex. It requires the Radiographer to balance image quality and diagnostic benefit against any possible damage caused to the patient from the radiation dose required to produce the image. Our research in this area is mainly focused on image quality assessment using physical, psychophysical and psychometric techniques, and radiation risk assessment using direct measurement and modelling techniques.
- Our research within breast imaging focuses on the practical issues faced in the clinical environment, such as compression force variability, improving the positioning technique, measuring the impact of acquisition factors on the image quality and dose.
Crucial role
As well as supporting the department’s research interests, the facilities play a crucial role in our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
Equipment
Our equipment is state of the art and includes 2 imaging rooms a CT scanner, a mobile machine, a mammography machine, ultrasound scanners and dental equipment. We also have a range of interactive simulation equipment including the virtual Anatomage table and a wide range of phantoms which replicate human anatomy; these are used by students within simulated learning activities.
Radiographic techniques
These facilities allow our undergraduate students to gain skills in radiographic techniques before they begin any clinical placements while postgraduate students use them for project work and research purposes.
