Why should you study at the University of Salford?
The course offers vocational qualifications embedded into the degree including as Level 2 Gym Instructor and Level 3 Exercise Referral.
The course team have an excellent reputation and has worked on projects with industry partners such as Manchester Velodrome, Nike and the Federation of International Lacrosse to name a few.
You have the opportunity to put your skills into practice by undertaking in-practice placements.
Human Performance Lab
Facilities include our world-class human performance laboratory which contains almost every type of physiological, performance analysis and biomechanical testing equipment, including a 30-metre sprint track with inbuilt force platforms, motion capture systems, blood and gas analysis equipment and speed guns. We also have a separate physiological testing laboratory and fully equipped strength and conditioning suite, which includes an isokinetic dynamometer and portable force platforms.

Exercise and Physiology Lab
We also have extensive equipment in our exercise and physiology laboratory including:

Portable and static online gas analysis systems for breath-by-breath cardiopulmonary exercise testing, including VO2 max tests

A Lode Cycle Ergometer to provide isokinetic testing conditions within cycling

An Analox G37 Multi-Assay Blood Analyser to study blood lactate concentration. We also have a range of field-based Lactate Pro analysers, which have been used to test professional athletes as part of our partnerships
The University is also home to three gait labs, which, together with the human performance lab, are used to conduct research by the Centre for Health Sciences Research that underpins your learning.
What connections to industry do you have?
Manchester has the greatest density of professional sports teams in the country. We are lucky enough to have links with a number of them! Students currently enjoy placements and work experience locally at Sale Sharks, Salford Red Devils, Oldham FC and Wigan Warriors amongst many others. We also have placements further afield at Southampton FC and with Major League Baseball in the USA! The many partnerships help you to get a foot in the door for your chosen career whilst you are still studying, building your CV and networking contacts for when you leave university. We also support work in amateur sport and placements in teaching for those who wish to pursue a PGCE following their BSc degree. There are also lots of opportunities for volunteering and assisting with research.
What career paths are available from BSc Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine?
Our Nutrition and Exercise as Medicine graduates go into employment in a range of roles and settings. One student has recently been awarded the Greater Manchester Mayors award for an exercise programme they set up for individuals with cancer. The knowledge and experience from the Exercise, Nutrition and Health course prepared them well for setting up safe and effective exercise programmes for special populations such as those with cancer. We have another student who graduated last year who is gained employment in the area of cardiac rehabilitation, delivering safe and effective exercise programmes for those with cardiovascular disease. We have had other students who have went on to work in nutritional roles, developing exercise programmes for those with disabilities, further study, working in exercise referral, health and well-being coordinator, health promotion, and teaching roles to name a few.
