University of Salford to delve into disruptive animation education at Manchester Animation Festival

Categories: School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology

The University of Salford is delighted to be partnering with the Manchester Animation Festival again this year on a special event exploring animation education.

‘Educating Animators Online: Disrupting the Paradigm of Animation Education’, taking place on Monday 16 November, will take an online "unconference" format, to interrogate teaching methodologies, technologies and industry insight in the challenging time of COVID-19 pandemic.

The upheavals of the pandemic have presented opportunities to share and debate good practice across the education sector and open up conversations with industry to support knowledge transfer, shape a graduating student ready for industry, lifelong learning and how we shape it through a community from schools to studio and online.

Attendees can expect discovery and knowledge sessions, networking and a keynote session with acclaimed animator Jonathan Mortimer.

Manchester Animation Festival is the UK’s largest Animation Festival dedicated celebration of the animated art form. The University of Salford session is part of a wider programme of events, made up of screenings and exclusive previews of short films and features, as well as masterclasses, live Q&As, panels and screen talks.

Animation is one of the fastest growing areas within the UK creative industries, providing multiple opportunities for graduates within the discipline. Located at MediaCityUK, the University of Salford is positioned right in the heart of this growing creative sector.

Beth Hewit, Creative Director, School of Arts, Media and Creative Technology, says: ‘Our BA Animation students are based at our MediaCItyUK campus, allowing them plenty of access to animation practitioners, events and opportunities, and enabling them (the next generation of animators) to develop, network and engage with industry.

Manchester Animation Festival is a fantastic example of a festival that has captured the imagination of its audiences. Returning this year in its online guise offers the University of Salford a great opportunity to also develop its online presence. ‘Educating Animators Online: Disrupting the Paradigm of Animation Education’ brings together practice, industry engagement and research in a place where they are able to sit alongside each other, collaborating on many levels’.

‘Educating Animators Online: Disrupting the Paradigm of Animation Education’ will take place on Monday 16 November 2020 from 10am until 3.30pm.
