Salford fashion graduate lands design job after sending safari-chic down the runway
Natalie Slater, a designer from Worsley in Salford, is taking her unique style to John Lewis after landing a job with the household name. The University of Salford graduate caught the eye of industry after showcasing her collection at London Fashion Week last month.
Her eye-catching safari-inspired collection took inspiration from the likes of 'Old Celine', Victoria Beckham, and Stella McCartney and explored the practical details of Safari clothing combined with elegant evening wear inspired by the Victorian era.
Natalie said: “I’ve have always dreamed of going on a safari, so I used my collection to transport myself there. I combined these two elements to create a modern take on garments worn when on Safari.”
She continued: “The actual event was incredible and to see my garments come down the runway was the most amazing feeling after all the hard work and effort I put into it.”
As well as landing a dream role at John Lewis, Natalie has been selling hand designed silk scarves and donating the proceeds to the Born Free Organisation who work towards banning trophy hunting and improving animal welfare. “I know safaris can have negative connotations of trophy hunting which is why I decided to raise money by selling scarves,” she said.
While studying BA (Hons) Fashion Design at Salford, Natalie has had the opportunity to travel to Tokyo, Milan, and China with her most notable trip being a three-month long internship in New York where she presented her portfolio and outfit at New York Fashion Week.
She said: “Salford is amazing for preparing us for industry. Since getting a job within the fashion industry, I feel that I have easily transitioned into the lifestyle and I have the right skills to excel in my job role.”
