Campus Masterplan: the difference a year can make

Categories: School of Science, Engineering and Environment

If we rewind to this time last year, the foundation piles for the new School of Science, Engineering and Environment Building (SEE) were just being laid. Now the building is more than 50 per cent complete.

Looking forward one year to September 2022, we will have the keys to the new £65 million building with plans underway for a phased moving in for colleagues and students. The SEE building is quickly taking shape and its innovative features already stand out as a space that will provide unrivalled study and learning opportunities for students. An open-plan layout prioritises natural light and collaborative workspace areas. There are dedicated spaces for departments to continue their exceptional research and teaching, including a wind tunnel and high-spec laser laboratories. The building is the new home for the University’s Robotics, Built Environment, Engineering and Computer Science departments as well as our industry digital fabrication facility the Morson Maker Space.

Spanning four storeys and 15,550 square metres, the new SEE Building is a vital part of the Crescent Masterplan, a multi-million pound regeneration scheme aimed at driving economic and social prosperity for the whole of the city over the 10-15-year life of the programme.

Huw Williams, Chief Operating Officer at the University of Salford said: “The SEE building will play a huge part in creating a ‘sticky campus’. We want to create a community where people stay on campus. It’s not just about the buildings but a community of learning, a community of industry engagement, and how we can create and support those communities through the way we develop the physical infrastructure.

“I really hope to see the social learning spaces we’ve invested in - with the SEE building a brilliant example of this - being used to the fullest, and I’m sure they will be.”
