“I got paid to watch Ronaldo score a hat-trick!”- The Salford graduate who achieved his childhood dream.

Thursday 28 March 2019

A graduate from The University of Salford who secured his ‘dream job’ before he’d even completed his studies is going from strength to strength as a journalist, and has been given the chance to report on some of the world’s biggest football games.

Nathan Salt beat thousands of people to get the job as a reporter for The Mail, and works across three of their most popular publications, the MailOnline, The Daily Mail and The Mail on Sunday; covering a rang of topics and sports.

One of his recent accomplishments was match reporting on the Champions League last-16 tie between Juventus and Atletico Madrid, one of the tournaments most memorable games as Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick!

Nathan said:

“It was a really surreal moment because it is the biggest tournament in club football and I was being paid to watch and report on one of the greatest players ever. Safe to say I had goosebumps in Turin that night."

The 23-year-old graduated with a First Class Honours in Multimedia Journalism back in 2017, and has thanked Salford for the great work experience he received when studying here. He said:

“Salford was great for me because its links with industry allowed me to gain vital work experience which caught the eye of the Mail when I applied to get a spot on their fiercely competitive graduate trainee scheme in 2017. When I studied at The University of Salford I had work experience, paid and unpaid at BBC and Manchester United, two big players in sports journalism.

I stay in touch with the department and remind them that I owe them a great deal for starting me off to help me to where I am today.”

He explained that it was his drive for the industry that helped him succeed, as well as making some minor alterations to his life…

“In university I sacrificed a number of Saturday nights out to go to games and report on teams such as Droylsden and Ashton United and now I am lucky enough to experience teams like Juventus in the Champions League. Speak to people, build up contacts and keep knocking on the door.”
