Runway event showcases fashion design stars of tomorrow

Monday 23 May 2016

The fashion design names of tomorrow will be showcased at a runway show at Hotel Football.

Final year Fashion Design students at the University of Salford will have their work shown during the event, taking place on the hotel’s impressive roof area at 7pm on Tuesday 24 May.

This is the first time the University has hosted their annual catwalk show at Hotel Football, which takes place before the students’ work is shown at Graduate Fashion Week in London, and the University will be working with partners from companies such as Vidal Sassoon, Cassie Lomas Make Up Academy and Creative Skillset to produce the event.

The show will feature work by designers such as Sarah Curtis, whose work is also currently being exhibited alongside pieces by Vivienne Westwood in Manchester Art Gallery’s Fashion and Freedom exhibition, reflecting how the First World Impact changed the clothing and attitudes of British women, and who is showing her collection based on a rollergirls theme.

Emma Lewin, who made it to the final eight in a global contest run by Levi’s to create the 501 jeans of the future, will showcase her collection inspired by the caravan holidays of her childhood.

Karin Human, who travelled to the UK from South Africa to study on the prestigious University of Salford’s Fashion programme, has created a range of clothing to reflect the styles of her home country. Karin was also selected as a finalist in the Levis 2020 competition – out of nearly 600 design students from around the world –  and her pieces are also featured in the Fashion and Freedom exhibition.

Of her recent success and experience at Salford, she said: “The University’s close links with the fashion industry was one of the main reasons I chose to come to the UK to study at Salford. The programme here has given me some wonderful opportunities to have my work seen at a very impressive level, and the fashion runway show, taking place in one of the city’s most prestigious venues, will be an excellent conclusion to my time here.”

The runway show is being held as part of the University’s two-month Create Salford Festival, which showcases the achievements of students from the School of Arts & Media and celebrates the University’s close links with the creative industries, featuring art and photography exhibitions, poetry readings, live theatre, music concerts, and comedy performances.

Gemma Moran, University of Salford Fashion Design lecturer, said: “This event will be a real celebration of the incredible talent which we are nurturing here in Salford and in a fantastic setting overlooking the Manchester and Salford skyline.

“Some of the designers whose work is being showcased at Hotel Football have already had some major professional achievements, and I have no doubt that this event will feature several names to look out for in the future.
