5. Chemistry Tower viewed from behind Maxwell Building
The photo shows the Chemistry Tower looking impressively tall. One of its defining features was a paternoster lift, which consisted of a chain of open compartments that moved up and down in a loop without stopping. Passengers would have to step on and off depending on which floor they needed. By the 1990s the building became too expensive to maintain and in 1993 it was agreed it would be demolished.
