Continuing a Salford legacy: Lesa's experiences studying LLM Law
Lesa from California, USA arrived to study LLM Business Law and Regulation after studying her bachelor’s at Salford several years earlier.
Take a read of her experiences as a mature student.
Returning to Salford
“I had a great experience completing my undergraduate degree and I love Manchester so returning to the University of Salford for my postgraduate degree was an easy decision. Salford does a great job of supporting you as a student. Plus, the diversity of the student body makes the discussion and lectures much more relevant to the actual workplace environment.
I’ve lived all over the world, so I didn’t experience too many culture shocks – although I had forgotten how much Manchester rains compared with California. However I don’t let that stop me and recently did a sunrise hike of Mam Tor, a mountain in Derbyshire about an hour and a half away from Manchester.
I make sure to stay connected to my friends and family back home and I have made friends in Salford since coming back.
I try to attend as many networking events as possible, both on campus and through the business connections I have in Manchester. I think trying to network and participate in as many things as possible makes here feel more like home.”
LLM Global Business Law and Regulation
“The best thing about this course is the diversity of our lecturers and cohort. To participate in a master’s which brings relevant experience and knowledge from so many different geographical regions is as valuable as the lecture content.
The course is taught through a combination of lectures, webinars and workshops, all linked to the day’s lecture outcomes. The lecturers are engaging and make participation a relevant learning priority.
I have gained a real understanding of the specific language used in legal environments and how to apply this in the business world. Learning to understand the legal context is critical for me, as I’m often working with corporate lawyers but I’m from a non-law background.
My favourite part of the course was actually an assignment. We had to develop and record a podcast assignment as part of the Global Financial Regulations podcast. I loved this assessment.
The course is helping me to determine the focus for the next stage of my career and provides a valuable underpinning to business law. The lecture material is challenging but in a great way.”
Outside of the classroom
“I have joined a few Manchester Woman in Business Networking events. I believe this is a really good way to meet people already working in the space and make connections which could help with my job search after I graduate.
I don’t have a particular favourite thing to do in Salford when I’m not studying. I generally try to enjoy the moment and have a healthy balance in life between planning it and experiencing it.”
My advice
“There is lots of support available at Salford but you need to be willing to ask for it. I recommend that you keep an eye out for emails from askUS, participate in events on campus, ask for help when you need it and use the resources provided.”
