Joanne Ashworth



Joanne qualified in 1997 from the University of Teesside where she trained in 3 Newcastle hospitals and since then has worked at a number of hospitals in the North West of England.  Through this experience she developed a broad range of radiographic skills and knowledge but general radiography has always been the area where she has found most enjoyment.

Joanne began working at the university in January 2013 but had been part of the Radiography team for some years working as a clinical tutor at the Royal Bolton Hospital.  In her clinical role she worked in general radiography and was an advanced practitioner - reporting radiographer and it is these skills that remain the focus of her interests now.  

In 2016 she completed her MA in Clinical Education with a dissertation seeking to understand how we might help students to develop their image appraisal skills.  This has led to an interest in percept development and pattern recognition that is informing her teaching methods for both undergraduate and postgraduate students.


Joanne is the lead for clinical skills development within level 4 modules which prepare students for clinical placement.  By adopting teaching techniques to stimulate thought and problem solving and by providing plenty of resources to direct learning, her aim is to enable students to develop as individuals.  At level 5 Joanne also works as part of the team to continue supporting students to develop their skills to deal with more complex clinical scenarios.  Wide use of clinical skills labs at level 4 and 5 provide students with the opportunity to practice in a safe and supported environment, learning radiographic technique, communication, elements of patient care and image appraisal.  When lectures are necessary Joanne aims to include techniques to promote discussion and interaction and often includes a quiz. 

Joanne leads on musculoskeletal image interpretation for both undergraduate level 6 and post graduate programs.  She also teaches anatomy and patho-physiology and for some of these tutorials employs an interactive 3D anatomy tool, the Anatomage Table.

Research Interests

Joanne is interested in investigating the potential benefits of using comparison images to help students to recognise changes in a test image.  This may be useful in the development of image appraisal skills for undergraduates but also image interpretation skills.
