Prosthetics, Orthotics and Podiatry
Prosthetists and orthotists deal with the assessment, diagnosis and management of the whole of the body. Prosthetists provide artificial limbs (prostheses) to people who have all or part of a natural limb missing. Orthotists provide supportive braces and splints (orthoses) to people with various conditions of the limbs or spine. Prosthetists and orthotists work with people of all ages and with different requirements. If you want to make a real difference to people’s lives then a career is prosthetics and/or orthotics could be for you.
Podiatry is the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of foot and lower limb disorders, many of which are caused by general health disorders. You will use comprehensive assessment and diagnostic skills to develop patient care pathways for conditions which impact on people's quality of life. Qualified podiatrists find employment in hospitals, GP clinics, in the community, or can set up in private practice. They can work alongside doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and other professionals and are seen as a vital part of the health care team.
Prosthetics and Orthotics
Students of prosthetics and orthotics are taught hands-on clinical practice while dealing with patients in our custom-designed clinic rooms. Further practice is undertaken in our workshops which boast a well-equipped machine room with CAD/CAM facilities and the plaster room where impressions of patients' anatomy can be modified for the subsequent manufacture of custom-made prostheses or orthoses. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct motion analysis in one of three movement laboratories. Postgraduate students also carry out work on research towards their Master or Doctorate degrees.

I chose Salford University because of its strong reputation as one of the leading schools in the country for Podiatry. It also stood out due to its modern facilities and clinic on campus. Prior to starting the course I went in to shadow different clinics and I enjoyed observing the practical aspects of the course. An additional bonus was that the university was easily accessible and within a commutable distance from home. I was given the opportunity to complete a variety of different placements during the course, which provided me with great experiences over the three years. However my passion has always been to specialise within the MSK/ Biomechanics side of Podiatry. I think the benefits for the students of working with me are that they are able to touch a residual limb on a real person and not a dummy. TrainOrthot: Trans-national on-line course to provide specific vocational training to professionals on the treatment of foot pathologies
TrainOrthot's main objective is to create and validate a transnational e-learning training offer, tailored to meet the educational needs of the foot orthopaedic sector in different European countries by adapting and transferring the results obtained in a previous Research & Development (R & D) project, INNOFOOT (Innovative Treatment of Foot Disorders COLL-CT-2006-030468). INNOFOOT generated training materials with a generic syllabus not specifically addressed to the particular professional profiles of different countries.
TrainOrthot will create and validate four courses adapted to Slovakians, Czechs, Spaniards and English professionals in the Foot Orthopaedic Sector and Vocational Training students to facilitate the access to the life-long learning. Researchers from the participating R & D centres will act as course tutors, bridging the gap between R & D's and companies (especially SME's), regarding emerging technologies and innovative materials.
The role of the University of Salford is to be responsible for an audit in four countries (Slovakia, Czechoslovakia, Spain and the UK) to identify their training needs and to develop the on-line training packages to be suitable for each country. Salford’s role is also to undertake a pilot study in the UK on the training packages.

United National Institute for Prosthetics & Orthotics Development (UNIPOD)
The prosthetics and orthotics division at the University of Salford (UNIPOD) focuses on assistive devices for limb absence and limbs.
Funded by the NHS Strategic Health Authority it is the only prosthetics and orthotics higher education provider in England, providing undergraduate education for England, Northern Ireland, Wales, and international students. It is responsible for the highest number of prosthetics and orthotics graduates per year in the UK.
Its work includes teaching, research and enterprise and is collaboratively linked with clinical, industrial and other academic partners for the development of future professionals and the production of clinically relevant research.
UNIPOD’s position as leaders in prosthetics and orthotics developments is well founded. Many graduates are now leaders in the profession, both nationally and internationally, with many peer-reviewed journal publications and conference abstracts published globally by the large postgraduate community and supervisory team.
The word UNIPOD, defined as a one-legged support is also a synonym that reflects core P&O work, namely assistive devices for limbs and limb absence.
With multi-national experts from a variety of backgrounds, UNIPOD’s education provision extends beyond the undergraduate levels, and includes postgraduate UK and international students undertaking Masters or Doctoral research degrees. Postgraduate research and enterprise is mostly supported through close collaboration with clinic-based professional partners, the industry, and a worldwide network of experts and institutions.

Great Foundations is a collaborative initiative being led by the University of Salford and the University of Brighton. Over the next five years we will be carrying out research to understand parental views related to children’s foot health and investigate what health and industry professionals know and think about children’s feet.
Funding of £1.5 million comes from the William M. Scholl Endowment Fund, a charity focused on advancing foot related research and education in the UK. The fund is part of Central and North West London NHS Trust.
