Dr Elaine Beaumont

Lecturer in Counselling and Psychotherapy/Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist


I joined the University of Salford in 2009 as a part-time lecturer in counselling and psychotherapy. I have spent over 15 years working in education and the counselling and psychotherapy profession.

I am an accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and Europe approved Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing practitioner.

I provide psychotherapy for a variety of organisations including Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

I also provide clinical supervision for individuals who work for Anxiety UK, The Priory Hospital and Beacon Counselling Services.


My academic interests focus on therapeutic interventions for trauma, compassion in healthcare, knowledge, theory and practice of counselling and psychotherapy, mental health provision, and the importance of practitioner self-care. I teach on the School’s undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Research Interests

My professional background is in psychotherapy, psychology and mental health care. My research interests include:

  • Helping individuals to respond to suffering with self-compassion
  • The cultivation of compassionate care
  • Examining the impact Compassionate Mind Training, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, and Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy has on individuals suffering with trauma-related symptoms
  • Working with individuals who are suffering with symptoms of trauma, secondary traumatic stress and/or burnout
