HIGHLIGHTS OF 2019/20: Former student wins BAFTA

Maeve O’sullivan, who graduated from the University in 2015 after completing MA Children’s TV Production course, was awarded a BAFTA for film, ‘Finding My Family: Holocaust – A Newsround Special.’

The BAFTA was awarded in the Factual Category for the documentary that followed a holocaust survivor and his teenage granddaughter on a journey to learn about his experiences.

Speaking about the achievement, Maeve said: “I feel absolutely thrilled to have been part of the team that won the BAFTA. I was the Assistant Producer on the project and cast the film, set up shoots abroad, and worked with the contributors and crew across Europe. It was a real honour and privilege to spend time with Steven Frank. He went on a journey with his granddaughter Maggie to tell his family story during the Holocaust.”

“It’s an experience I will never forget, and I’m so proud our work has been recognised by the industry with this award,” she added.

Maeve now works for BBC Newsround, something which she thanks the course for, she said: “The course provided a great insight into working in the media and opened up a lot of doors for me. If it wasn’t for this MA course, I would never have gotten my first gig in TV! It was a really creative and interesting environment where you were able to pursue your own ideas as well as working in groups.”
