Inspiring Salford

Manchester Bee made at the University of Salford's Maker Space

People who face challenges in their lives from a young age can be prevented from reaching their full potential. Different social and environmental factors can make a significant impact on the route a young person might take and the decisions that they make. At Salford, we are immensely proud of our strong track record in raising the aspirations of groups under-represented within HE and unlocking the possibilities of a university education.

Inspiring Salford is an initiative that aims to propel young people in the community to consider university as an option that is open to them after their school journey ends. This year, we are delighted to be working with the Success4Life project at the University of Salford to achieve the project’s aims.

Success4Life is the next step in the University’s mission in championing the experience of young people in the care of their local authority. In collaboration with Greater Manchester Higher, variations of these eight week programmes are run across Greater Manchester in order to equip young people with life skills that might not be shared with participants through any other channels. Since joining this initiative, the University of Salford’s programme has seen young people participating in the programme, receive taster sessions in money management and budgeting, as well as conquering their fears, take psychometric quizzes, and experience learning in a university environment.

Thanks to Success4Life, social workers and foster carers who have nominated young people to attend have seen a significant difference in the young people’s approach to learning and breaking down perceived barriers – with many young people citing that thanks to the programme, they see higher education as a possibility in their academic futures.

By making a gift to Inspiring Salford, it means that we can continue to run this vital programme, and pay for transport for the young people to attend the Success4Life course – a common barrier to participation. Not only will we be able to continue the programme, but the impact of your gift will extend to ensuring that we can offer a wider variety of dynamic enrichment activities, enabling Success4Life to have a positive lasting impression on the lives of young people in the community.

This project is the most rewarding that we get to deliver during the year. It’s great to see the development of the learners as they progress through the project and the confidence they gain as a result. They go from quiet, shy and unassuming children to outgoing, happy and confident young people, ready to take on the world!
