Event details

This symposium will be the first convened by Mixed Bill, a newly established interdisciplinary comedy and gender research network currently comprised of researchers from the Universities of Salford, Leeds and Sheffield Hallam. This inaugural event will be a vibrant mixture of academic papers, interventions, workshops and panel discussions and will coincide with theopening of the 2017 Women in Comedy Festival in central Manchester. This event seeks to explore, challenge and confront women’s inclusion and exclusion from comic forms and hopes to inspire further research into the area of comedy and gender identities. To this end the event is supported by Comedy Studies Journal.

Presentations and performance-papers will cover live, radio and screen comedy with topics including the capturing and reclaiming of female comic performance, gender subversion in improvised comedy, intersectional feminism on the live circuit and the comic female body in activism.

The opening keynote Smack the Pony: Queering Post feminism in British Sketch Comedy will be given by Dr Rosie White and the day will conclude with a forward-looking industry panel. This panel will feature, amongst other guests, Hazel O’Keefe (Director of the Women in Comedy Festival), Caroline Moran (Rose D’Or winning co-creator of C4’s Raised by Wolves), Jackie Hagen (Stand-up performer) and Rebecca Papworth (BBC comedy producer).

This event has been made possible by the support of both University of Salford and Sheffield Hallam University.
